STEM CELL PROJECT
Introduction
One of the most promising and controversial fields in biotechnology involves the
use of human stem cells for treatment of childhood or adult illnesses. The stem
cells are most often obtained as a result of embryos formed as part of an in vitro
fertilization procedure. The embryos formed are not used for implantation within
the female but have been fertilized. The fertilized embryo has divided a number
of times and is stored cryogenically at the blastocyst stage of development. It is
this stage that can yield very useful stem cells. It is also the entire process of
forming the zygote and the use of the blastocyst that is so controversial to a
number of groups.
Assignment
This project has two parts. In the first part you will research the issues behind
stem cell research. This includes what stem cells are and how they are used.
Your research must also include information about why there exists a
controversy about the use of stem cells for research. Having completed this
research you will create a 3-5 minute podcast about the use of stem cells. This
podcast is designed for the general public as a means of educating them to your
belief as to how stem cells should be used. You are allowed to create your own
opinion but it must be backed up with supporting documentation or evidence.
Think of the podcast as a brief information item for television news or a science
and technology show on the radio/internet. You will be shown examples of
podcasts that will help you to design your podcast for this topic.
The second part of the assignments requires you to review the current laws
regarding the use of stem cells in Canadian research. The relevant links to the
appropriate laws will be shared with you. Research time will be given to review
the. You will need to reflect on what further steps should be taken to regulate the
use of stem cells in Canada. This will include reviewing the laws of other
countries to help you frame the changes you will suggest. Changes do not have
to move research even further forward. You may choose to create laws that
place greater limitations on the use of stem cells. Regardless of the direction you
propose you must include sources and reasons for your suggestions.
Evaluation
See the attached rubrics. Please make note of the differences between the two
parts of this project.
