Hardness is the “scratchability” of a mineral. Geologists use a numerical scale
called Moh’s scale to help identify and rank minerals according to their hardness.
The scale was developed in 1812 and is still used today. Just remember that as
your students “scratch” their mineral samples, scratches cannot be rubbed off the
mineral’s surface. A true scratch is a permanent mark.
