ELEMENT PROJECT
You are to choose an element from your periodic table that is between 5 and 35. This project will
be due on November on Thursday November 3rd. I will be available after school on Tuesday
November 2nd if you need assistance.
A. Use your book, the internet and reference materials to find the following information.
After finding
this information you are to present this in a friendly pen pal letter to any element of your choice. Use
this to organize your information! You will also have a separate grade for the quality of your writing
based on the rubric. Plagiarizing from the sample will incur negative points.

Once you have gathered your data, you will use it to make a 3 dimensional model of an atom of your element.
Be as creative as you can. Some of the things that could be used are styrofoam balls, clay, aluminum foil,
pasta. You are to label the parts of the atom or have a code for it. You will need to show the electrons in their
paths. This will be turned in with part A of the project. If you need help with materials, please see me!!!!
Extra credit for recyclable materials. Points will be deducted for material that is incorrect and for
plagiarism.
You will be graded according to the following characteristics:

45 Planet Earth Dr.
Milky Way, Univ.
October 11, 2016
Dear Ununseptium,
Welcome to the family of the Periodic Table. My name is Hydrogen, but my friends call me H
for short. As I am the oldest element, you are one of the youngest.
I have always been here since the beginning of the universe, but it wasn’t until Henry
Cavendish in the 1700’s was experimenting and recognized me for being so unique. He gave me
the name Hydrogen which is Greek for “water-former.” I think it has the Greek name because one
of my best friends is Oxygen and when we combine you know us as water. I actually make up
75% of the mass of the universe and I am found in stars as the plasma state of matter. If you put two
of me in the same room, I make Helium and lots and lots of energy through fusion. (I can’t believe
that the scientists here on Earth have not been able to do this.)
I am the simplest of all the elements. You have 117 protons where I only have one, along with
one electron and one neutron. My atomic mass is 1.00794 which is really light. That is why I was
used to inflate early airships. You do remember what happened to the Hindenburg, don’t you? I
am very combustible!
I am a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas with a density of .08988 g/L and my melting
point is -259.14 C○ and can you believe that I boil at -252.87 C◦? You would be an icicle in that
room!!
I really don’t belong to any family on the Periodic Table as I am so unique that they don’t
know where to put me. I don’t belong to the Noble gases since I can combine easily with many
friends.
I have to go now, please write back when you have a chance. It is so great to have a new
family member. Will you be around for our holiday celebration? Hope to see you then.
Yours Truly,
Hydrogen

Closing (Sincerely...), 5
Signature 6
P.S. 7
In the friendly letter format, your address, date, the closing, signature, and printed name are all indented to the right half of the page
(how far you indent in is up to you as long as the heading and closing is lined up, use your own discretion and make sure it looks
presentable). Also the first line of each paragraph is indented.
Your Address 1
All that is needed is your street address on the first line and the city, state and zip on the second line. (Not
needed if the letter is printed on paper with a letterhead already on it.)
Date 2
Put the date on which the letter was written in the format Month Day Year i.e. August 30, 2003. Skip a line
between the date and the salutation.
Salutation 3
Usually starts out with Dear so and so, or Hi so and so. Note: There is a comma after the end of the salutation
(you can use an exclamation point also if there is a need for some emphasis).
Body 4
The body is where you write the content of the letter; the paragraphs should be single spaced with a skipped line
between each paragraph. Skip 2 lines between the end of the body and the closing.
Closing 5
Let's the reader know that you are finished with your letter; usually ends with Sincerely, Sincerely yours, Thank
you, and so on. Note that there is a comma after the end of the closing and only the first word in the closing is
capitalized.
Signature 6
Your signature will go in this section, usually signed in black or blue ink with a pen. Skip a line after your
signature and the P.S.
