CONCEPTION, PREGNANCY, and CHILDBIRTH
1. Pregnancy
Pregnancy is the period during which the baby develops in
the uterus. The period is divided into three stages called
trimesters.
A. First trimester: first three months
B. Second trimester: fourth, fifth and sixth month
C. Third trimester: seventh, eighth and ninth month
2. First signs of pregnancy (1st trimester)
A. Failure to menstruate
B. Enlargement/tenderness of breasts
C. Morning sickness (upset stomach)
D. Frequent urination
E. Fatigue or urge for more sleep
3. Childbirth
Often called labor or delivery takes place in three stages. Labor
is about to begin or has begun when the amniotic sac breaks.
A. First Stage:
1. Begins with contractions
2. Involuntary muscle movements by the uterus
3. Baby moves into the vagina
B. Second Stage:
1. Cervix is fully dilated
2. Ends when the child emerges from birth canal
C. Third Stage:
1. After birth- expulsion of placenta
4. Birth Complications:
A. Caesarean section:
-Baby is surgically removed from the uterus
B. Breech Birth:
-Baby’s buttocks or feet pass through vagina first

A. Fertilization:
-When sperm unites with the ovum
B. Embryo:
- Developing baby in the first two months
C. Fetus:
-Developing baby during the third through ninth
month
D. Heredity:
-Traits passed from parent to child
E. Stillborn:
-Baby is born dead
F. Miscarriage:
-Uterus expels the embryo before it can lift on it’s
own
