Comparing and Ordering Integers R. Atkinson 7th Grade Math Day 2 Period: Date: Approximate time: 50 minutes OBJECTIVE: TSW compare and order integers. (DOK 2, 1h) MATERIALS: pencil and paper, dry erase markers, transparencies, wet erase markers, overhead, worksheets Warm Up: (5 min) 1. 25- 5/1 + 4 – 3 2. 10/2 -35 + (9-7) 3. 11 + (27/ 9)^2 * 4 4. 87- (36-11) * 3 +9 SET: (2 min) Last class we learned about order of operations (PEMDAS) and the importance of maintaining that order when solving these type of problems. Today, in this lesson, you will compare and order integers. PROCEDURES: A. Vocabulary: Integers are the set of whole numbers, their opposites, and zero. Negative integers are less than 0. Positive integers are greater than 0. Zero is neither negative nor positive. On the number line, negative integers are to the left of 0 and positive integers are to the right of 0. The distance from 0 on a number line is called absolute value. The absolute value of both -3 and 3 is 3, so therefore they are equal. (3 min) B. Teacher will draw a number line from -10 to 10. When comparing and ordering integers, the number in the number line shows that any positive integer is greater than any negative number. (3 min) C. Example 1 ( 9 min) Compare the following set of integers. - 10 and 0, 7 and -4, -1 and 10, -5 and -3 **When comparing negative integers, the integer with the largest place value has the lowest value. For example, the integer -100 has a larger place value than -50, so -100 is more negative than, or less than, -50. D. Example 2 (7 min) Order the following integers from least to greatest. -5, 2, -3, 0 Strategy Use a number line to order the integers. Step 1 The integer that is the farthest left is the least. -5 is the farthest left, so it is the least integer. Step 2 Order the remaining integers from left to right. -3 is to the left of 0, which is to the left of 2. Solution From least to greatest the integers are -5, -3, 0, 2 E. Independent Practice. The students will compare and order integers. The teacher will walk around the room informally assessing the students work and answering any questions that the students might have. (19 min) CLOSURE: (2 min) This period we compared and ordered integers. Next period we will add and subtract integers. Remember what we learned today it will help you next period. Objective: TSW compare and order integers. (DOK 2, 1h) ASSESSMENT: Informal The students will complete a set of problems that will require them to compare and order integers (C). The teacher will walk around the room informally assessing the students work (M). Formal The students will take a test on Friday (M) which will require them to compare and order integers (C). This test will be graded and recorded in the grade book (D).
