Rock Cycle Questions and Short Story
Determine which type of rock was created by the following event:
1. Magma rose from the mantle and slowly cooled in a crack deep below the
earth’s surface.
2. An earthquake shook a mountain causing an avalanche. The rocks fell
down the side of a mountain and landed in a shallow ocean where they
were buried for millions of years.
3. A river carried little sand grains and mud to the ocean where they were
buried for millions of years.
4. A volcano erupted molten material across a rift valley.
5. Two tectonic plates converged with great pressure and created folded
mountains out of rock that used to be igneous and sedimentary.
6. Sedimentary rocks from the oceanic crust are subducted below the
continental crust. The rocks of the oceanic crust melt in the subduction
zone and eventually harden slowly below the surface of the earth.
7. Brand new rocks are erupted from the mid oceanic ridge.
8. Coal lies buried deep below the continental crust and is squeezed by great
pressure from the rocks above and turns into diamond.
9. Water and wind weather and erode a mountain into little tiny pieces which
are carried by rivers to a huge ocean. The pieces fall to the bottom of the
ocean and are buried for millions of years. The pieces get cemented
together by minerals dissolved in the seawater.
10. An igneous rock from a composite volcano is subducted under an oceanic
plate and receives a lot of pressure and heat. The crystals in the rock
become squeezed and oriented into bands. It looks gneiss.
Write a 5 paragraph short story that explains a rock’s journey through the
rock cycle. Write the story as if you where the rock. Explain what is
happening to you. Explain what you see.
