Simulation of the Roman Republic

You will be participating in a simulation of the Roman Republic. You will act
as a Patrician, Plebeian or slave. You will have a performance task,
discussion task and a summary task.
People in the Roman Republic lived in social classes.
Patricians were the wealthy aristocrats and often held offices in the
Senate, Magistrate and the Assemblies. Patricians could also be elected
consul and even dictator. The Plebeians acted as merchants, artists and
soldiers. They also had an assembly called the Tribunes. You will have a job
and you will be paid according to your social class.
Patricians – 2 Gold Coins
Plebeians – 1 Gold Coin
Slaves – no Coins
Performance Task: See handout in the envelopes on the tables
Discussion Task:
The discussion topic will be discussed with your social class.
Topic of discussion: Rome needs to continue to build highways throughout
the conquered lands. In order to expand roads are needed. Roads will
improve trade which will improve your standard of living. Your dictator
wants to increase taxes to accomplish this task. Your discussion is can you
afford this new tax? Who should pay and should taxing be equal? Are new
roads a good thing? Who will they benefit? Think
List pros and cons of your decision.
Once you have completed your performance task and discussion task work on
your summaries.
