Darwin Day Competition! Choose from the following list the letter of the ONE evolutionary concept that best describes or defines each situation: a. b. c. d. e. f. g. h. adaptive radiation i. allopatric speciation convergent evolution k. directional selection disruptive/dispersive selection m. geographical isolation behavioral isolation o. temporal isolation founder effect j. genetic drift mimicry l. stabilizing selection sympatric speciation n. gametic isolation mechanical isolation p. hybrid sterility 1. IN the 1700’s a sailor left a breeding pair of dogs on the Galapagos. The dogs ate middle-sized marine iguanas. Smaller lizards could hide in rock crevices: larger ones were too big to handle. Darwin found two size populations of the reptiles when he visited years later. 2. Today in Nevada there are numerous species of pupfish, each restricted to a single water hole. These water holes are all that remain of large lakes formed by glacial melt at the end of the Pleistocene epoch. 3. In the late 1800’s hunters destroyed most of the large population of northern elephant seals; only about 20 survived. Since then the population has increased to over 30,000. No allelelic variation has occurred in the 24 gene loci analyzed from recent samples. 4. The frequency of an allele responsible for particular shell morphology in a certain species of snails inhabiting Blue Island is 0.36. Initially no such snails were found on Green Island, 15 miles to the west, but three years after a severe tropical storm in the area, a population of snails was discovered there in which the frequency of this allele was 0.52. 5. Today it takes ten times more penicillin to kill the microorganisms that cause syphilis and gonorrhea than was required 30 years ago. 6. Careful measurements show that duck eggs of average size are more likely than smaller or larger eggs to produce viable ducklings. 7. Thirteen species of finches have evolved on the several islands of the Galapagos Archipelago, almost certainly form a single ancestral species. 8. The American Bittern is a bird which, due to its markings and its pose, resemble3s reeds and grasses in its environment. 9. In 1975, two Seattle aviaries each contained 15 blue and 15 green parakeets. IN 1988 all the parakeets in one aviary were blue; 75% of the birds were green in the second. 10. In 1982, M. Andersson studied the selective advantage of tail feathers in black-tailed widowbirds. By gluing on long tail feathers to the males he dramatically improved their success in attracting mates. 11. The American toad and Fowler’s toad live in the same ponds, but these species are morphologically dissimilar and complete mating and reproduction in different seasons. 12. Some species of Anopheles mosquito live and breed in brackish water, some in running fresh water and others in stagnant water. 13. Two species of orchids with different floral anatomy 14. Two species of pine shed their pollen at different times 15. Dog breeders maintain the purity of dog breeds by keeping dogs of different breeds apart when they are fertile. 16. 17. 18.
