ART & LEARNING
The Renaissance is the name given to the time period of history
between 1300 and 1600. The word “renaissance is a French word
meaning “new birth.” Probably the greatest achievement of the
Renaissance came in education and the arts.
The Renaissance began in Italy. Italy’s location in the Mediterranean Sea made the country
an important center of trade. Wealthy Italian merchants and bankers encouraged the growth
of learning and became patrons of art and culture. Scholars and artists of this time became
less concerned with religious thinking and more on understanding man and the world about
him.
Gradually, the new ideas of the Renaissance spread throughout the other countries of
Europe. The achievements of this period have influenced man’s way of thinking even today.

THE END
The Renaissance marked the end of the Middle
Ages and the beginning of modern times.
Between the years of 1400 and 1500 many
important things happened to bring about a
different way of life in Europe.

The inventions of the printing press and an
inexpensive way of making paper were
responsible for many of the changes. The
invention of the printing press made it
possible for people to read. Books,
especially the bible, became popular.
Authors began writing in different
languages and more people learned to read about what was happening
in the world.

Other important inventions were gunpowder, the compass, and the
telescope.

Explorers discovered new lands, like Christopher Columbus’
discovery of the “New World” (Caribbean Islands).
The world as people of the Middle Ages knew it no longer existed. New
inventions and discoveries were changing man’s view of the world. No
longer did people live to please their king. People were now more focused
