HURLEY-MUSCO Infectious Disease Unit Project Planning Name__________________ Period_________________ Due Date_______________ Introduction: For this unit we will be investigating different types of infectious diseases caused by bacteria and viruses. You can choose assignments from the three sections. You can (and must) choose only from Sections II and III. Essential Questions: What is disease and what are the possible origins of disease? What characterizes an infectious disease? For our final project, you must answer the following question (in a final project): How does our understanding of the causes of disease allow us to prevent its proliferation in crisis situations? Section I: Level Maximum 65 points 1. Listen to the lecture and take notes each day. (5 pts/day) 2. Flashcards on vocabulary terms. (10) 3. Write a paragraph on abiotic and biotic factors. (10) 4. Read a chapter on viruses. Answer 5 questions (you choose questions=10 points. My choice=15 points) 5. Design 4 viruses attacking 4 different cells. Include RNA and DNA structure (10) 6. Research differences between infectious and noninfectious diseases and create a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting the two (15) 7. Read one of the Xeroxed articles_________________. Give an oral summary. (10) 8. Read one of the Xeroxed articles__________________. Give an oral summary. (10) 9. Watch the video on viruses. Take notes and give me an oral summary. (10) 10. Write a children's book about Sue, the bacterial disease, and Tom, the virus. (20) 11. Work two worksheets. (10) 12. Find a current (this year) magazine or newspaper on any vaccination discovery. Give a summary. (10) Section II: Level Labs 15 points 1. Create a T-Chart on the effectiveness and practicality of the chicken pox vaccine. 2. Interview someone who has had cancer or lived with someone with cancer. Find out how the virus progresses, treatments and how the disease affected the person and family. 3. Design an experiment for testing a new AIDS vaccine. Include number of trials, subjects, and length of study. Section III "A" Level. Choose only one. Use "A" level sheet" 20 points 1. Create a 90 second public service announcement (with corresponding poster) that instructs private citizens (of all ages) on how to avoid catching and/or spreading infectious diseases following a disaster. 2. Create a pamphlet geared toward pre-school children that instructs them on how to avoid catching and/or spreading infectious diseases following a disaster. 3. Create a web-page that is geared toward teenagers and young adults that instructs them on how to avoid catching and/or spreading infectious diseases following a disaster.
