Pre-AP World History Agenda December 11 (Tuesday) Era II: Classical Civilizations and Rise of Religious Traditions, 1000 B.C. (B.C.E.) to 500 A.D. (C.E.) The student will demonstrate knowledge of ancient Greece in terms of its impact on Western civilization by: a) assessing the influence of geography on Greek economic, social, and political development, including the impact of Greek commerce and colonies. b) describing Greek mythology and religion. c) identifying the social structure and role of slavery, explaining the significance of citizenship and the development of democracy, and comparing the city-states of Athens and Sparta. d) evaluating the significance of the Persian and Peloponnesian wars. e) characterizing life in Athens during the Golden Age of Pericles. f) citing contributions in drama, poetry, history, sculpture, architecture, science, mathematics, and philosophy, with emphasis on Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. g) explaining the conquest of Greece by Macedonia and the formation and spread of Hellenistic culture by Alexander the Great. By the end of today’s block, you should be able to: 1. Understand the foundations, key leaders and effect of the Greek Empire. 2. Compare the two major city-states of Athens and Sparta. 3. Explain the key battles of the Persian Wars. Assessment: None Part I – Sparta vs. Athens – A Review (15 minutes) Individual Working on your own using your notes, chapter outline, AND the packet I provided comparing Sparta and Athens last class, complete the Athens/Sparta checklist. Part II – Poster Project (25 minutes) Pairs Follow the instructions to create a poster that will “advertise” EITHER Sparta OR Athens as the best place to live. Your work will be judged on its QUALITY and INFORMATION, so make sure it looks great! Part III – Crash Course: Persia and Greece (12 minutes) Individual Fill out the video guide as we take a look at the Greeks and the Persians. Part IV – Persian Wars Activity (30 minutes) Group Working with your group, use the provided documents to complete the chart on the Persian Wars. Homework: The following assignment will be due NEXT CLASS (Thursday, December 13): 1. Finish the Persian Wars activity ON YOUR OWN, if you have not yet completed it.
