WORLD CANCER DAY RUN for HOPE & JOIN THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER Together we save lives!!! INTRODUCTION WORLD CANCER DAY (WCD). The past decades have seen a progressive increase in the global cancer burden, with two thirds of cancer cases in low and middle income countries. According to International Agency for research on Cancer (IARC) GLOBOCAN 2012, there were 14.1 million new cancer cases, 8.2 million cancer deaths and 32.6 million people living with cancer (within 5 years of diagnosis) in 2012 worldwide. Fifty seven percent (8 million) of new cancer cases, 65% (5.3 million) of the cancer deaths and 48% (15.6 million) of the 5-year prevalent cancer cases occurred in the less developed regions. World Cancer Day is celebrated every year on 4th of February all over the world to commemorate all the efforts done by the WHO, United Nations, governmental and nongovernmental health organizations towards making the strategy to fight against cancer as well as distributing the real message about this epidemic disease and its treatments including its precautionary measures by uniting all the people one day a year on a global basis. It is celebrated and plans are made for new strategies and implementations of programs which help to make more people aware about cancer and join the fight against it. World Cancer Day 2017 will be celebrated all across the world on 4th of February on a Saturday but KCMC will celebrated on February 5, 2017 at Sunday. 1 WORLD CANCER DAY HISTORY OF WORLD CANCER DAY World Cancer Day celebration was planned in Geneva, Switzerland in 1933 under the direction of UICC (Union for International Cancer Control) and with the support of various other well-known cancer societies, research institutes, treatment centers and patient groups. The World Cancer Day event was founded to fulfill all the needs to fight and control cancerespecially creating awareness among people, teaching them about healthy diet, regular and proper physical activity and protection from environmental carcinogens and chronic infections. People are also educated on early detection of symptoms in order to detect the disease at its early stages as research has shown that early detection leads to cure and increased overall survival. HOW: KCMC WILL CELEBRATE THE WORLD CANCER DAY ON FEBRUARY 5, 2017 KCMC intends to organize a 5 kilometer marathonprogram on the day. The starting point will be the District Commissioners office and finish line the Cancer Care Centre gardens. This will help us to spread the special messages about risk factors for cancer, raising funds for ward and hostel, treatment and raise preventive measures. Leading health organizations as well as nongovernmental organizations take part by organizing camps, awareness programs, rallies, lectures, seminars and other engaging activities. Control measures and policies get implemented promoted and as many people are encouraged to join in masses. This event is celebrated every year by using a particular theme to make this event more result oriented among people. WHY CANCER CARE CENTRE (CCC) CARES TO JOIN THE WORLD TO CELEBRATE THIS WORLD CANCER DAY With statistics showing an increase in burden of cancer in low and middle income countries like Tanzania, and majority of our patients coming at late stages of the disease( 80% with advanced disease stages III-IV), Cancer Care Centre has decided to join hands in fighting cancer with four pillars: prevention, early detection, cure and palliation. Cancer Care Centre is further interested in educating the community and clearing many myths related to cancer. 2 WORLD CANCER DAY COMMON MYTHS AND FACTS ABOUT CANCER Below arecommon myths and believes about cancer among the general population. People think that cancer cannot be cured Some people think that cancer is a disease of the wealthy Some say cancer is a disease of the poor Some say it is a disease only of old aged people Some people think that suffering from the cancer is a punishment Some think it is fate Some think that cancer can only be treated and cured using herbal medicine. A substantial number think biopsy of a cancerous mass will cause it to spread faster. Why colored T-shirts? Different colures represent the various types of cancers. Purple – Purple ribbon for cancer general. Pink – Pink Ribbon for breast cancer Light blue – ribbon for prostate cancer Gold – childhood cancer awareness Clear ribbon – lung cancer Purple and green ribbon – hospice and palliative care Red, white and red (three stripes) – leukemia and lymphoma Teal and white ribbon – cervical cancer 4
