BACKGROUND INFORMATION OF THE RDTC
The Regional Dermatology Training Centre (RDTC) is a joint venture between the
Government of the United Republic of Tanzania through the Ministry of Health on one part,
and the International Foundation For Dermatology (IFD) on the other part together with the
Good Samaritan Foundation of Tanzania (GSF)/KCMC.
The International Foundation For Dermatology which serves under the aegis of the International
Committee of Dermatology (the Executive Committee of the International League of
Dermatological Societies) has as its primary aim to “Improve Dermatological Health in
Developing Countries through the promotion of services, training and services. These aims are
to be carried out on all levels with emphasis on primary health care by assisting in preventive,
curative, and rehabilitative activities”.
The concept of aiding in the establishment of Regional Dermatology Training Centres in
global areas of greatest need is a prime focus of the Foundation.
Since November 1998 the RDTC has been designated as WHO Collaborating Centre for
Dermatology, Leprosy and Sexually Transmitted Diseases.
LOCATION OF THE CENTRE
The RDTC is situated at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) Hospital
complex, which is just about 4 km form Moshi town.
The KCMC is a well established Supraregional Referral and Consultant Hospital with fifteen
(15) affiliated, successfully operating schools. KCMC has been converted into a constituent
Medical College (KCM-College) of the Tumaini University in October, 1997. The College
comprises the Faculty of Medicine, Institute of Allied Health Sciences and the Institute of
Postgraduate Studies and Research. The KCM-College offers also a 4 years M.Med. DermatoVenereology Residency programme. KCMC serves the whole Northern Zone of Tanzania. It is
operating in a semi-rural setting which facilitates field attachment and rural exposure.
The Kilimanjaro Region has one of the best climates in the whole country. Many tourists visit
the Region to see and climb Mount Kilimanjaro the highest mountain in Africa. Travelling to
RDTC presents no problems as there is an International Airport about 36 km, from the Moshi
town. There are International flights to the Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), e.g. KLM, Ethiopian
Airlines, Alliance, Precision Air, and Air Tanzania. Access to the airport from Moshi is
guaranteed. You are cordially welcomed to visit the land of Kilimanjaro with its friendly and
fairly hardworking people.
OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE
After completion of the course, graduates should be able to:1.
Diagnose and manage appropriately the common skin disorders including Leprosy,
HIV/AIDS and other STIs

Identify major courses of morbidity, and be able to plan and carry out appropriate
measures, for prevention of skin disease and STIs.

Communicate effectively with the public and other health workers in the promotion of
dermatological services.
4.
Conduct operational research, collect and analyse basic clinical and epidemiology data
and apply the findings to improve dermatological health in the community.
5.
Manage an Out-patient Clinic effectively and prepare monthly and annual report.
6.
Deliver health education and continuous education to the community and other Health
Personnel.
ENTRY REGULATIONS
Candidates for admission for the Advanced Diploma in Dermato-Venereology of the University
of Dar-Es-Salaam must:1.
Posses “O” Level Secondary Education Certificate with passes in Physics, Chemistry and
Biology.

Have successfully completed any one of the following courses with an overall good
performance grade(s).

(e)
Medical Assistant
Clinical Officer
Nurse Clinician (only from certain countries)
Family Nurse Practitioner
Or an equivalent level

Have worked satisfactorily for at least two years in the capacity of the posts shown in
2 (a) – (d) above.
4.
Have good command of spoken and written English.
5.
Should preferably not be over 45 years of age.
6.
Candidates MUST send their application through the Ministry of Health of their
respective country and obtain endorsement by the Permanent/Principal Secretary of the
Ministry of Health.
The Entry, Training and Examination Regulations are governed by the Regulations for Allied
Health Sciences Programmes of the University of Dar-es-Salaam.
DURATION OF COURSE
The training will be for two academic years. Each academic year has two semesters with a one
week breather in between. A community-based Health Systems Research (HSR) project will be
carried out at home after the long vacation (August – September) in October (Semester III).

COURSE BEGINNING
The first semester begins in accordance with the academic year on Saturday, end of September
2004.
COURSE CONTENT
Subjects covered are General and Clinical and Community Dermatology, Practical Diagnostic
and Therapeutic Procedures, HIV/AIDS, and other Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)
(Prevention, case management and public health interventions), General Anatomy and
Physiology of the Skin and Genito-Urinary System, Pharmacology and Therapeutics in
Dermatology, Primary Health Care (PHC) / Community Based Health Care (CBHC), Teaching
and Learning Methodology, Designing and Conducting Health Systems Research Projects and
Health Management and Planning.
THE FINAL AWARD
Successful candidates will be awarded an ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN DERMATOVENEREOLOGY of the UNIVERSITY OF DAR-ES-SALAAM. The Advanced Diploma
will not be graded. Letter grade marks for each subject will be available for the purpose of
academic transcripts.

Accommodation:
Students are accommodated in the comfortable RDTC HOSTEL situated
adjacent to KCMC. They will be provided with the necessary cooking
utensils, beddings, mosquito net and blankets. They have to provide their
own food but will receive a living allowance for food and other expenses.

TEACHING STAFF
The Resident Faculty staff is composed of Dermato-Venereologists, a Leprologist and
Community Health Specialists.
The Principal is in-charge of the all matters of the Training Centre. He is answerable to the
University Registrar/Principal in all academic matters through the Director, Institute of Allied
Health Sciences, Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences (MUCHS) and in clinical
matters to the Director, KCMC. The administration of the Training Centre is under the Ministry
of Health/Tanzania, GSF/KCMC and IFD.
PART-TIME FACULTY STAFF
Part-time teaching in specialized areas is provided by local and/or expatriate short-term
consultants (visiting faculty) in the field of Leprosy, Health Education, Teaching Methodology,
Primary Health Care (PHC)/CBHC, Health Systems Research (HSR) and Health Management
and Planning.
SPONSORSHIP
All candidates need to be sponsored. The employers are kindly requested to locate sponsors for
their nominees.
Scholarships should cover:
(i)
Return air fares at the beginning and end of each academic year.
(ii)
School Expenses per student per annum: (funds to be remitted to the school biannually)
They include tuition fees, cost of books, stationery and laboratory coats,
accommodation, cooking utensils, beddings, basic equipment kit, field work costs,
medical expenses, resident permit, membership of students organization and
caution money in the total amount of US$4,375.
(iii)
Student Expenses: Paid to the school which will disburse them as appropriate.
These include:(a)
Living expenses (food and personal expenses)
US$ 150 per month for a 10 months academic year
i.e. US$ 1500 p.a.
(b)
Travelling transit allowance US$ 200 p.a. total for the two trips per year.
(c)
Airport service charges for the two trips per year US$ 40 p.a.
(d)
Excess baggage at end of second year US$ 50

(e)
Research project expenses paid once during the course amount to US$
500.
INSURANCE
RDTC students get free medical treatment at the KCMC. Their own countries are liable for their
accident and life insurance.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
The candidate has to return to the school the completed RDTC application form which has to
endorsed by the respective Ministry of Health authorities. The form should be accompanied by
copies of the listed supportive documents like school leaving certificates, diplomas/certificates,
transcripts together with 2 passport-sized photographs. The School Selection Committee will
then scrutinize the documents and inform the candidate and/or employer and/or sponsor on the
acceptance by the school. This will then enable the applicant to locate a fellowship through
his/her employer. Because of existent deadlines for considering fellowships potential sponsors
should be approached not later than April.
