Together we save lives!!!
INTRODUCTION
WORLD CANCER DAY (WCD).
The past decades have seen a progressive increase in the global cancer burden, with two thirds of cancer
cases in low and middle income countries. According to International Agency for research on Cancer
(IARC) GLOBOCAN 2012, there were 14.1 million new cancer cases, 8.2 million cancer deaths and 32.6
million people living with cancer (within 5 years of diagnosis) in 2012 worldwide. Fifty seven percent (8
million) of new cancer cases, 65% (5.3 million) of the cancer deaths and 48% (15.6 million) of the 5-year
prevalent cancer cases occurred in the less developed regions.
World Cancer Day is celebrated every year on 4th of February all over the world to commemorate all the
efforts done by the WHO, United Nations, governmental and nongovernmental health organizations
towards making the strategy to fight against cancer as well as distributing the real message about this
epidemic disease and its treatments including its precautionary measures by uniting all the people one day
a year on a global basis. It is celebrated and plans are made for new strategies and implementations of
programs which help to make more people aware about cancer and join the fight against it.
World Cancer Day 2017 will be celebrated all across the world on 4th of February on a Saturday but KCMC
will celebrated on February 5, 2017 at Sunday.

WORLD CANCER DAY
HISTORY OF WORLD CANCER DAY
World Cancer Day celebration was planned in Geneva, Switzerland in 1933 under the direction of UICC
(Union for International Cancer Control) and with the support of various other well-known cancer societies,
research institutes, treatment centers and patient groups. The World Cancer Day event was founded to
fulfill all the needs to fight and control cancerespecially creating awareness among people, teaching them
about healthy diet, regular and proper physical activity and protection from environmental carcinogens and
chronic infections. People are also educated on early detection of symptoms in order to detect the disease
at its early stages as research has shown that early detection leads to cure and increased overall survival.
HOW: KCMC WILL CELEBRATE THE WORLD CANCER DAY ON FEBRUARY 5, 2017
KCMC intends to organize a 5 kilometer marathonprogram on the day. The starting point will be the District
Commissioners office and finish line the Cancer Care Centre gardens. This will help us to spread the
special messages about risk factors for cancer, raising funds for ward and hostel, treatment and raise
preventive measures. Leading health organizations as well as nongovernmental organizations take part by
organizing camps, awareness programs, rallies, lectures, seminars and other engaging activities. Control
measures and policies get implemented promoted and as many people are encouraged to join in masses.
This event is celebrated every year by using a particular theme to make this event more result oriented
among people.
WHY CANCER CARE CENTRE (CCC) CARES TO JOIN THE WORLD TO CELEBRATE THIS WORLD
CANCER DAY
With statistics showing an increase in burden of cancer in low and middle income countries like Tanzania,
and majority of our patients coming at late stages of the disease( 80% with advanced disease stages III-IV),
Cancer Care Centre has decided to join hands in fighting cancer with four pillars: prevention, early
detection, cure and palliation.
Cancer Care Centre is further interested in educating the community and clearing many myths related to
