Required supplies: Acoustic guitar, picks, pencil, binder with paper. A tuner is highly recommended.
Guitar goals and activities
By qualifying for enrollment in this class, students are assumed to have an excellent knowledge of all concepts taught in
Beginning Guitar.
Theory – Students will be able to:
 Demonstrate an understanding of major/minor tonality.
 Demonstrate an understanding of scale degree
 Perform major, minor, pentatonic, and blues scales.
 Perform scales in the traditional modes.
Playing Position – Students will be able to:
 Demonstrate proper finger-picking technique for the classical position.
 Demonstrate moving finger-picking technique for folk and jazz.
Staff notation – Students will be able to:
 Tell the names of notes from the 1st through 12th frets on the low E, A, & D strings.
 Perform rhythms correctly, from 16th notes through whole notes.
 Perform songs from traditional notation.
Tablature – Students will be able to:
 Compare and contrast notation and tablature.
 Perform songs from tablature notation.
Chord Notation and Symbols – Students will be able to:
 Play first position major 7’s and minor 7’s
 Play moveable bar chords major 7”s, minor 7’s, dominant 7, and diminished
 Change one chord type into another, e.g. major to minor
 Read Chord extensions, including symbols and abbreviations
Culture and Style – Students will be able to:
 Identify master guitarists
Performance – Students will be able to:
 Improvise chord accompaniments to simple folk melodies
 Improvise different finger-picking patterns to simple folk melodies
Guidelines for Success and Classroom expectations
 Follow instructions the first time given and keep on task. If you choose poorly, you will be written up on a discipline
referral form and consequences will follow.
 Be in your assigned seat with your guitar and stand two minutes after the bell
 Do not talk or play during teaching
 Food, drink, and gum are prohibited (other than water)
 Treat peers with courtesy and respect
 Keep hands, feet, and guitars to yourself. The use of band and orchestra equipment in the room is prohibited
 EHS late work policy applies to playing tests. You are responsible to make up missed playing tests by
appointment.
 Electronic devices (cell phones, iPods etc.) will be confiscated when used at inappropriate times.
ELECTRONIC DEVICES SHOULD NEVER OUT UNLESS SPECIFIED
Assessment:
Students will receive a participation grade each day in class. This grade is based on preparation of music, general attitude,
and ability to contribute to the class environment. Students will be graded regularly on daily playing tests and assignments.
Test values are graded on pitch, rhythm, style, and performance presence. Playing tests are weighted on difficulty.

Guitar Storage
Students are required to label their guitar and guitar case with their names. White electrical tape works well for
guitars and luggage tags work great for guitar cases.
MAKE YOUR GUITAR & CASE EASILY IDENTIFYABLE!
Eagle High School does not provide secured individual storage for guitars. Guitars are stored in the instrumental
music room, in an unsecure guitar storage unit. The EHS music room is used by over 225 instrumentalists at EHS.
A faculty member or coach is always present in the room when it is open for students. Although the room is secure,
guitars are stored in an open fashion. Students are responsible for properly storing their guitars. Students should
make their guitars and cases easily identifiable to prevent peers from mistaking one instrument for another.
According to Joint School District No. 2 policy paraphrased from p.13 of the high school handbook:
The school carries no insurance for lost or stolen items and is not responsible for them.
Students are responsible for all personal items brought to school. Joint School District No. 2 does
not accept liability for any personal item lost on school property due to theft, fire, water damage or
for any other reason. If you have lost an item, check at the main office in lost and found. If an item
has been stolen, please contact the security officer or the school resource officer or other
designated official. If you lose or find articles of clothing, purses, wallets, etc. please check in the
main office for the location of the lost and found. Items left in the lost and found may be donated
to charitable organizations.
Guitars left at EHS for over 1 year will be donated to charitable organizations.
