Summarize main idea and details in the graphic organizer below New Gov’t Gov’t and Church Economic growth Social Reform Bismarck and Wilhelm II - Power was shared between state and national governments - Took a federalist form - Wilhelm I led the government. - All men over the age of 25 could vote. - Political parties developed. - Germany had 25 separate states. - Bismarck believed the Roman Catholic Church posed a threat to the government. - Government should control aspects of culture (education) not the church. - Limited the influence of the Catholic Church in Germany. - Struggle between government and church was called “Kulturkampf” - France paid Germany for the damage caused after the Franco-Prussian War. - Leaders used this money to build their railroads in order to link the German States and businesses. - Coal mines and steel factories grew in Germany’s major cities. - German socialists protests against harsh factories conditions and wanted state control of all industries. - Bismarck blamed socialists for two assassination attempts made on the emperor. - Tried to destroy socialism & reduce its appeal among the German people with his own reforms. - Provided benefits for health, accidents, old age, and disability. - Bismarck wanted to destroy socialism. - Bismarck did not want to expand Germany’s borders. - Believed France was still a threat. - Established alliances with other European nations: Austria, Hungary, Italy, and Russia. - New Kaiser, Wilhelm II fired Bismarck as the prime minister but continued to form alliances with other nations and built the military forces in Europe. How did Germany change both economically and politically in the years following unification? After Germany’s unification the nation had grown both economically and politically through their expansion of transportation to connect various businesses throughout the country and having the development of new policies encompassing the entire Germany. Prussia now shared powers Norma Bourque-Pimentel December 10, 2011 World History, Period 7 between the States and national government; much like the United Sates has done. Men over the age of 25 were also able to vote and this led to other achievements like the development of political parties. The citizens were now able to express their political views which could also lead to an increase in nationalism. Economically Germany was able to grow because of France’s pay to Germany because of the damage they caused during the FrancoPrussian war. Rail roads were built and factories grew in numbers.
