Pillars of Civilization
There are several “pillars” or building blocks that help to determine the
value of a civilization. These pillars can be used to examine various
civilizations and better understand their evolution and impact on history and
the world today.
*Geography (Physical Environment) – Often the basic geography
dictated whether or not a civilization could thrive and be successful.
How much arable land did they have for farming; access to water: lakes,
rivers, streams for irrigation and drinking, natural boundaries such as
mountains, large bodies of
water to assist in defense and provide
observable means of separation from neighbors and enemies. Also,
access to terrain that allows easy travel within the country and to travel
to other countries or territories for trade, expansion of territory
*Governments – This was how peoples governed themselves, enforced
laws and order
 Monarchies: Governments ruled by a sovereign king or
queen (China)
 Dynasty: Family of rulers in which the right to rule is passed
on within
family (Egypt, China)
 Theocracy: Leader considered divine and equal to a god –
also there is no separation between “church” and “state” as
the leader is often both spiritual and civic/political leader
(Mesopotamia)
 Republic: Form of government in which a leader is not a
king and certain citizens were given the right to vote
(Greece)
 Democracy: System of government where people
participate in government decision making
 Oligarchy: Rulers of a few: King and selected aristocrats
(Athens)
*Religion – The belief of powerful spiritual beings that permeated all
aspects of the universe and helped to explain natural phenomenon that
early peoples did not understand. As nations evolved, religion gave
peoples a sense of immorality and a belief in life after death and
provided a sense of security
 Polytheistic: a belief in many gods (Greece, Rome)

 Monotheistic: a belief in one god (Israel, Muslim)
 Theocracy: no separation between church and state, the
state leader is also the religious leader (Mesopotamia)
Social Structure (classes/make-up of society)- Often social structure
determined the status of a person and what role they would play in their
civilization Status often determined privileges and ability to participate in
government or religious rites. Many civilizations promoted an upper,
middle and lower class
 Upper Class: Ruling class, usually comprised of ruling
class, wealthy, and often religious leaders. Can often
include warriors
 Middle Class: Usually comprised of merchants, craftsmen,
farmers, some minor government or civil workers
 Lower Class: poor, impoverished, disenfranchised (noncitizens, slaves)
 Patriarchal: dominated by men
 Caste System: Rigid Social Class System that does not
allow for movement from one class to another (India:
Brahmans, Kshtriyas, Vaisyas, Sudras, Untouchables)
* Writing (Written Language– The innovation of writing allowed
civilizations to record events, pass on knowledge, write down laws, and
texts to advance reading which led to the classic literature and epic poems
and stories as folklore started to be written down for future generations
 Cuneiform (Wedge shaped writing) (Mesopotamia)
 Hieroglyphics (pictures and abstract forms) (Egypt)
 Hieratic Script (simplified version) used for record
keeping
 Semitic: 22 letter alphabet
 Hebrew
* Contributions – Cultural advancements that impacted future civilizations
 Arts: Paintings, Drawings, Sculptures, Drama, Literature
(Greek: Illiad and Odyssey)
 Architecture: building designs and layouts (Mesopotamia:

*Reason for Demise – Every great civilization has, for the most part,
evolved from birth, maturity, to decline. What has caused the demise of
great civilizations of the past:

 Moral decline (Loss of law and order)
 Overexpansion of territory (Rome: Split into two empires
 Outside forces invasion
* Cities – What great cities were identified with ancient civilizations—the
rise of
cities advanced populations, promoted trade, and cultural
advancements. Also, cities became the locations for the seat of power of
civilizations
* Dates – When did the civilization exist: some civilizations evolved in
stages
others existed for only a short period of time. Registering dates
helps to track
longevity of a civilization as well as progression of
civilizations over time.1
