Heat energy can pass through solids, liquids and gases. Heat energy can be transferred from hot areas to cool areas in 3 ways. The 3 methods are conduction, convection and radiation. Conduction This is the movement of heat energy from hotter parts to cooler parts without any movement of the substance itself. 1- What happens to a metal rod when it is place in hot water? _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ 3- Can you explain why? Try to use words like particles, energy, transfer in your answer. _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ Convection This is the transfer of heat through the movement of particles from hotter parts to cooler parts. 1-Draw a diagram to show what happens when water is heated. Radiation This is the transfer of heat energy by waves. This type of energy transfer can travel through space. 1-Why can you feel the heat from a fire when sat near it? _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ 2- Why will an ice-cream melt in the sunshine? _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ 3- Why should we wear a hat in cold weather to keep warm? _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ Describe and explain how we can stop heat escaping from our homes. What are the different methods of insulation and how do they stop heat from escaping?
