Shayla B December 16, 2007 The President of the United States The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington D.C., D.C. 20500 The President of the United States Earthquakes are a major death loss all over the world. Are their certain areas of the world most prone to earthquakes or is it just coincidence? I’m Shayla Brown and I’m an earthquake specialist here to answer your questions about earthquakes, hopefully this letter will save millions of people from the dangerous disaster of earthquakes. The most recent earthquakes are occurring along the ring of fire. In the United States this includes California, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. These areas are most likely to get earthquakes because they are along a tectonic plate boundary. California has the very famous fault San Andreas Fault that makes this area even more prone to earthquakes. The parts of the earth most prone to earthquakes are around the ring of fire. The area with the most earthquakes is Indonesia and South Eastern Asia. We are able to predict where earthquakes are going to happen by knowing that most occur along faults or plate boundaries. The relationship between earthquakes and volcanoes is that some places have both earthquakes and volcanoes. Like Japan has both of them. Also they both occur along the ring of fire and many plate boundaries. The cause of earthquakes is pressure building between two tectonic plates. After a while they release their energy, making waves travel through the earth or on the surface. The wave that creates the most destruction is the Surface Wave. This shakes the earth and sets off the balance of buildings. Thank you president for hiring me to help you research and better understand earthquakes. Hopefully this information is useful to you and the country of the United States. Sincerely, Shayla Brown Lead Scientist –USGS Earthquake Division
