Welcome to The Caversham Group Practice
Online
We regularly update this site in order to keep you informed of all new practice changes and
developments We are situated in beautiful purpose built acommodation in Kentish Town - a
short walk away from the tube and mainline stations. The practice is easily accessible with good
public transport links. We are an NHS group practice and a partnership of seven doctors. We all
share a deep commitment to the NHS and aim to provide you with the best possible care within
the NHS. None of the partners in the practice sees private patients but we will arrange referrals
to private specialist when appropriate.
We have been an established teaching and training practice for many years andare currently
involved in teaching both undergraduate students and qualified doctors. We have a full
complement of attached staff including district nurses, health visitors, community psychiatric
nurses, midwives and social workers. We are also fortunate enough to have a wide variety of
visiting consultants providing us with outreach specialist clinics in fields such as ophthalmology,
gynaecology, rheumatology and psychology. These clinics enable us to provide conveniant and
rapid access to a variety of specialst NHS services if needed - without the need to travel to
hospital.
You can find out information about medical conditions and diseases through our patient
information leaflets as well as keep up to date with all the latest practice news and
developments.
Our opening Hours are 8.30am until 6.30pm Mondays to Fridays. We are currently offerring
some routine appointments outside of these core hours including on Saturday mornings, but the
practice is closed during these times unless you have an appointment.
We are always looking to improve our services so please let us know what you think using the
feedback form our contact page. We hope that with your help and co-operation we will be able
to make this website a useful and effective resource. The content is regularly examined and
updated as necessary. Please feel free to browse the site and find out more about the services
that we offer.
When re-ordering medication please note that we require 48 hours notice before prescriptions are
ready for collection.
Thank you for tolerating the disruption caused by our recent building work. The work to install a
new lift, renovated patient toilets and four new upstairs consulting rooms is nearly complete.
Dr Iona Heath retired from the practice in January of this year. We will all miss her hugely and
wish her well in her new role as President of the Royal College of General Practitioners.
We are continuing our attempts at improving access to our appointments.
In order to improve your access to a GP, we will now be offerring routine appointments from
7.30am on some mornings and from 9am to 12am on some Saturday mornings.
Help us to keep your clinical record up to date. Please click on the "clinical record" link at the
bottom of this page to update us.
Our new "self check area" is now open. Appointments are no longer needed for routine BP
checks. We now have a dedicated area in the waiting room eqipped with state of the art
electronic equipment with which to measure your own BP. Receptionists will be on hand to
assist you. Height and weight can also be checked.
The Minor AilmenScheme can enable you to get prompt treatment for a range of minor
health problems. For further details see the link under Practice Information.
GP Appointments
You can make an appointment in person at reception or by telephoning the
surgery. Appointments are for 10 minutes and run from 08.40 - 11.30 and 14.00 - 18.40. We
also offer routine appointments on Saturday Mornings and on some weekday morning from
7.30am.
We encourage patients to try to see their usual doctor each time and particularly to see the same
doctor for the same problem. However, you can choose to see another doctor if you wish.
We have recently introduced a new Rapid Access Surgery
(www.cavershamgrouppractice.co.uk/info.aspx?p=4&pr=F83022) which offers a large number
of appointments which can be booked in the usual way 24 - 48 hours in advance. These
appointments are suitable for any problem which needs attention sooner than the next available
routine appointment. Rapid access appointments are pre booked by telephone or in person. You
will be given an appointment time but we cannot guarantee that you will see a specific
doctor. For very urgent problems we offer the opportunity to discuss the problem witha doctor
by telephone on the same day in order to decide what further action may be required.
When attending for your scheduled appointment please try out our electronic check in. This will
log details of your arrival and automatically inform the GP/Practice nurse of the fact that you are
now waiting to be seen
Practice Nurse Appointments
These are booked via the receptionists in the same way as GP appointments. Most practice nurse
appointments are for 15 minute slots although occasionally longer appointments are offered for
specific purposes such as dressings or diabetic checks.

Blood Tests
We are able to offer an in-house phlebotomy (blood testing) service avoiding the need for
patients to attend hospital for routine blood tests. If your GP requests blood tests - please book an
appointment for these tests via the reception desk. All blood testing is now done on an
appointment only basis. We no longer offer a "walk in" service for blood testing
Cancellations
Approximately 15% of our routine appointments are wasted due to patients not attending. We
can usually fill an appointment even at very short notice so please help us by cancelling any
appointments which are not wanted.
If you are unable to attend your appointment please ring to cancel it so that it can be offered to
someone else. You can contact our cancellation line on the following number 020 7530
6537. You can also cancel your appointment online.
Home Visits
If you are housebound or too ill to get to the practice, you can ask to be seen at home.
However. please do not ask for a home visit unless you really cannot get to the surgery
because of a health problem.
GPs can see several patients at the surgery in the time it takes to get to a patient’s home. In
addition, when making home visits, GPs do not have the facilities and equipment the surgery
provides.
Non-urgent visits can be arranged with your doctor with a few days notice.
Urgent visits will be done as quickly as possible, but your own doctor may not be available. It
helps if you can ring before 10.30.
If you wish to speak to your doctor, you will be asked to leave a contact number and a brief
description of your problem. Our doctor will normally be able to return your call at the end of
surgery.
If you are telephoning in an emergency, make this clear to the receptionist and one of the doctors
will call you as soon as possible.
Telephone Consultations
We are introducing a pilot scheme whereby some of the GPs in the practice will be offering
telephone consultations in addition to their usual appointments. These appointments can be
booked in advance or on the same day by our receptionsists and are designed to deal with simple
issues which are unlikley to require a face to face consultation. Your receptionsist will inform
you of the availability of these appointments. If the initial trial starting in April 2008 is
successful, we may offer these appointments more widely.
Please note that we require 48 hours notice before prescriptions will be ready for collection.
Please allow 48 hours, excluding weekends and Bank Holidays, for your request to be processed.
Any problems please telephone 020 7530 6500. We are unable to answer clinical queries by
email at the current time.

Foreign Travel
Travel advice and immunizations – Caversham Group Practice
Foreign travel advice and immunisations are provided by the practice nurses. They give
advice on health while abroad and draw up a list of immunizations and antimalarial tablets which
are recommended or required for the travel you are planning. Their advice is based on the
international recommendations. Please complete the attached form. Return it to the practice as
soon as you can, or bring it to your appointment.
Antimalarial tablets and some immunisations are not available on the NHS, and the nurse will
advise you of the cost of the immunisations and prescriptions you will need. The costs of those
immunizations and services for which there are charges are listed on the attached sheet. You will
be required to pay at Reception when you see the nurse, so please bring cash or your cheque
book.
It is best to see the nurse about six weeks before you travel, or even earlier if you have a
complicated itinerary e.g. long-term travel, multiple countries, backpacking. If you are traveling
at short notice the nurses will try to help you, but if they cannot, they will recommend that you
contact a travel clinic such as one of those listed below. All these charge for all services.
The following travel immunizations are available on the NHS:
· Hepatitis A
· Diphtheria, tetanus and polio
· Typhoid
· Cholera
The following travel immunizations are not available on the NHS and have to be paid for:

Antimalarial tablets
Malaria can kill and many malarial parasites have become immune to traditional antimalarials.
Protection from the bites of the mosquitoes which carry the malarial parasite is essential, but we
strongly recommend that travellers take the antimalarials internationally recommended for the
area they are visiting.
Some antimalarials are available over the counter. Prescription-only antimalarials have to be
written on a private prescription, i.e. the pharmacist will charge you the cost of the tablets.
Our nurses will advise you on the latest advice on antimalarials for the area you will be visiting
and will tell you if they are available over the counter and will issue a prescription if they are not.
Regular medication
Please check that you have enough of your regular medication to last for your trip.
A charge is made for the following:

Lifestyle Advice
Smoking - We are keen to give all our patients who smoke as much help as possible to stop.
Please ask at reception or at any consultation for information and support. We have a smoking
cessation counsellor (www.mysurgerywebsite.co.uk/staff.aspx?h=) who can offer help and advice
to patients wishing to stop smoking
Walking - Even the smallest effort can improve your quality of life and make you feel healthier
and livelier. As walking is a very good exercise which most people are able to do, and don’t need
special equipment for, then why not get started on your fitness campaign. Simply start by
walking for 15 or 20 minutes at a brisk enough pace to get your heart beating faster, 3 times a
week regularly. When you can easily walk for an hour you are ready to move on to swimming,
cycling or running!
Healthy eating - A healthy diet doesn’t need to be a boring one. Health experts tell us we are all
eating too much fat, salt etc, but what exactly does this mean? Why not speak to your
doctor/nurse or pick up some of our information leaflets so you can enjoy a healthier diet?
Healthy Lifestyle - We are fortunate enough to currently have access to a Public Health
Assistant who can provide advice and support on all aspects of lifestyle and health promotion
activity. Rona Stanway is our new and incredibly enthusiastic healthy lifestyle counsellor. If
you plan to make changes in your diet exercise or lifestyle in order to improve your health - you
can ask to book an ppointment with Rona for advice support and encouragement. You won't be
disappointed!
Drugs and alcohol - If you have a drug misuse or alcohol related problem and are serious about
helping yourself - then it is not too late to ask for help however entrenched your difficulties
might seem. We are fortunate enough to have close links with our local substance misuse
service and run a practice based drug clinic on a weekly basis aided by an outreach counsellor
(Gillian Davies) from this service. We also have close links with our local alcohol services and
in the near future hope to develop practice based services for thos with alcohol problems.
Sexual Health - we can provide screening for common sexually transmitted diseases and advice
about minimising your risk. We offer HIV and hepatitis screening and immunisation agains
hepatitis B for thos at high risk. We offer a full range of contraceptive services including IUD
insertion. We can provide you with free condoms.
