Words with More than One Job
Many words in English can have more than one job, or be more than one part of speech.
For example, “work” can be a verb and a noun; “but” can be a conjunction and a
preposition; “well” can be an adjective, an adverb and an interjection. In addition,
many nouns can act as adjectives.
To analyze the part of speech, ask yourself: “What job is this word doing in this
sentence?”
In the table below you can see a few examples. Of course, there are more, even for
some of the words in the table. In fact, if you look in a good dictionary you will see
that the word but has six jobs to do:

verb, noun, adverb, pronoun, preposition and conjunction!

Pronoun Case
Pronouns (and nouns) in English display "case" according to their function in the
sentence. Their function can be:
 subjective (they act as the subject)
 objective (they act as the object)
 possessive (they show possession of something else)
5
The following table shows the different forms for pronouns depending on case.

A problem of case: Mary and I or Mary and me?
1. Mary and I are delighted to be here today. (NOT Mary and me)
2. The letter was addressed to Mary and me. (NOT Mary and I)
In 1, Mary and I are subjects, which is why the pronoun takes the subjective case ("I").
In 2, Mary and I are objects, which is why the pronoun takes the objective case
("me"). An easy way to check the correct case is to try the sentence without Mary.
Would you say "I am delighted to be here" or "Me am delighted to be here"? Would
you say "The letter was addressed to me" or "The letter was addressed to I"?
Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, Nobody
That's Not My Job!
This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would
do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that,
because it was Everybody's job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody
realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could
have done.

belong to different types with a different meaning for each type.
It is advisable to study the context of use, and check the meaning
