... team won a championship with 60 points. They won 12 more games than they tied. How many wins and how many ties did the team have? Let x be the number of games they won and y be the number of the games they tied. They won 12 more games than they tied translates to: x = y + 12 For x games they won, th ...

Solve the system of equations.

... A system of equations is a set of two or more equations that contain two or more variables. A solution of a system of equations is a set of values that are solutions of all of the equations. If the system has two variables, the solutions can be written as ordered pairs. ...

... Now we solve the system 3x  4 y  12. (3) Notice that if we add equations (1) and (3), we will not eliminate any variables. If the –2y in equation (1) were changed to –4y, we would. To accomplish this change, we multiply both sides of equation (1) ...

System of polynomial equations

A system of polynomial equations is a set of simultaneous equations f1 = 0, ..., fh = 0 where the fi are polynomials in several variables, say x1, ..., xn, over some field k.Usually, the field k is either the field of rational numbers or a finite field, although most of the theory applies to any field.A solution is a set of the values for the xi which make all of the equations true and which belong to some algebraically closed field extension K of k. When k is the field of rational numbers, K is the field of complex numbers.
