... cavity through a small hole in a curved mirror. We add an optic directly after the intracavity focus. The element acts as a diffraction grating for all harmonic orders and yet, is a near perfect high-reflector for the 1070 nm fundamental light. We find this optic produces no measurable decrease in t ...

... Brewster angle windows allow loss-less laser beam exit from a lasing medium into air (for proper polarization), where adjustment of the reflecting cavity mirrors is easy. Where μ1 ≠ μ2, there can be a Brewster's angle situation for both incident polarizations. In this case the numerator can be zero ...

A short introduction to light and electron microscopy

... In wide field microscopy the whole sample is illuminated with light. Different modes of illumination can be employed. In transmission microscopy white light is transmitted through stained histological samples. Unstained samples can be analyzed using optical contrast methods (phase contrast, differen ...

Finite element simulation of microphotonic lasing

... FDTD simulation utilizing unstructured grids, but to the best knowledge of the authors this has not been demonstrated. The finite element method (FEM) can utilize unstructured grids and as a result can model a wide variety of geometries. In this paper we present a FEM model of a microphotonic system ...

Unit 7 Microwave Objective Study the characteristics of microwaves

... Microwave is a kind of electromagnetic waves whose wavelength is among 10 m ~10-4 m (the wavelength of the microwave we use in this experiment is 2.85 cm.), and the propagation direction can be determined by Maxwell’s Equation. In vacuum, electric field E and magnetic field B of a microwave are perp ...

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

... The basis of NIRS relies upon two principles: (1) that tissue is relatively transparent to nearinfrared light and (2) that there are compounds in tissue in which absorption of light is dependent on the oxygenation status of the tissue (Elwell & Phil, 1995). The propagation of light in tissue depends ...

Magnetic circular dichroism

Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) is the differential absorption of left and right circularly polarized (LCP and RCP) light, induced in a sample by a strong magnetic field oriented parallel to the direction of light propagation. MCD measurements can detect transitions which are too weak to be seen in conventional optical absorption spectra; they can also probe paramagnetic properties and the symmetry of the electronic levels of the studied systems, such as metal ion sites.
