... isotropic media (FIG. 5.7a&b). Measured RI of minerals has a fundamental importance. This parameter, especially in solid solution series is very important, as it may be used to determine the composition of the solid solution species (FIG. 5.8). RI’s of diffrent polymorphs also show linear relationsh ...

45.Z-scan measurement of the nonlinear refractive index of graphene

... The fabrication process produces loosely stacked graphene layers wherein the optical properties are expected to arise from the cumulative contribution of each layer. We measured the real and imaginary parts of the complex nonlinear refractive index by using the Z-scan technique [15]. Our experimenta ...

... Fast multispectral confocal mapping has great promise for imaging cancer at the cellular level [1]. Biomedical researchers have shown that laser induced autofluorescence at 500 to 800 nm can detect cancer in unstained tissue [2]. Existing technologies have not combined sufficient spatial, spectral, ...

There is emerging interest now in employing silks’ intrinsic chemical response for microfiber-based sensor geometries. Spider silks from orb-weaver spiders are naturally suited to this application, as they posses ...

... photonic crystal fiber has been the subject of extensive research [2–7]. Particular interest has focused on understanding the SC noise properties, as the SC amplitude and phase stability are key factors in assessing potential applications. Although initial research here concentrated on establishing ...

We remark that one way of interpreting this rendering process is that we take regions of size M from each microlens image ...

The light crystal is set up by retroreflecting the central part (3.5 cm) of a collimated Gaussian laser beam (FWHM ca. 3.5 cm) at a mirror in the vacuum. At the metallic mirror surface the two light fields are in phase. ...

Harold Hopkins (physicist)

Harold Horace Hopkins FRS (1918–1994) was a renowned British physicist. His Wave Theory of Aberrations, (published by Oxford University Press 1950), is central to all modern optical design and provides the mathematical analysis which enables the use of computers to create the wealth of high quality lenses available today. In addition to his theoretical work, his many inventions are in daily use throughout the world. These include zoom lenses, coherent fibre-optics and more recently the rod-lens endoscopes which 'opened the door' to modern key-hole surgery. He was the recipient of many of the world's most prestigious awards and was twice nominated for a Nobel Prize. His citation on receiving the Rumford Medal from the Royal Society in 1984 stated: ""In recognition of his many contributions to the theory and design of optical instruments, especially of a wide variety of important new medical instruments which have made a major contribution to clinical diagnosis and surgery.""
