Nothing is known about the functions of the smaller eyes, but if the slit eye contains a lens it would indicate that this eye is more complex than previously believed. Thorough morph ...

... integrated system. Optical forces play an important role in an optomechanical system, which have been proposed and demonstrated based on diverse configurations, for example, a suspended Fabry-Perot cavity or high-finesse micro resonators with the radiation-pressure force [1] and an evanescently coup ...

In the phenomenological approach developed by Fresnel, no special form of K (χ ) is used. It is assumed to have the value unity at C where χ 5 0 , and it is assumed to decrease ...

Damping rates of the atomic velocity in Sisyphus cooling

... In our experiment 85 Rb atoms are cooled and trapped in a 3D dissipative optical lattice red detuned with respect to the Fg = 3 ջ Fe = 4 D2 line transition. The procedure to load the atoms in the optical lattice is the standard one used in previous experiments [12]: the rubidium atoms are first cool ...

... studying weakly scattering and absorbing specimens (Popescu, 2011). The main challenge in generating intrinsic contrast from optically thin specimens including live cells is that, generally, they do not absorb or scatter light significantly, i.e., they are transparent, or phase objects. Harold Hopkins (physicist)

Harold Horace Hopkins FRS (1918–1994) was a renowned British physicist. His Wave Theory of Aberrations, (published by Oxford University Press 1950), is central to all modern optical design and provides the mathematical analysis which enables the use of computers to create the wealth of high quality lenses available today. In addition to his theoretical work, his many inventions are in daily use throughout the world. These include zoom lenses, coherent fibre-optics and more recently the rod-lens endoscopes which 'opened the door' to modern key-hole surgery. He was the recipient of many of the world's most prestigious awards and was twice nominated for a Nobel Prize. His citation on receiving the Rumford Medal from the Royal Society in 1984 stated: ""In recognition of his many contributions to the theory and design of optical instruments, especially of a wide variety of important new medical instruments which have made a major contribution to clinical diagnosis and surgery.""
