Mechanisms of response homeostasis during retinocollicular map
Mechanisms of response homeostasis during retinocollicular map

... bidirectional control of intrinsic excitability. Recently, we showed that the total synaptic input onto individual neurons of the mouse superior colliculus is preserved regardless of the size of their visual receptive fields, a phenomenon we term ‘response homeostasis’. Here, we argue that regulatin ...
Memory fields of neurons in the primate prefrontal cortex
Memory fields of neurons in the primate prefrontal cortex

... The PF cortex plays an important role in a variety of functions critical for complex behavior, such as attention, response selection, and rule learning (16–20). Critical for these functions is the temporary maintenance of behaviorally relevant information (21, 22). In tasks that require monkeys to h ...

While it is sufficient in certain circumstances for a single node to represent the input (local coding) it is desirable in many other situations to have multiple nodes providing a factorial or distributed representation. Synaptic and extrasynaptic traces of long-term memory
Synaptic and extrasynaptic traces of long-term memory

... One challenge in understanding memory is the difficulty of modeling the information flow between neurons. To appreciate the problem, it is enough to point out that in the rat hippocampus, a typical pyramidal cell has about 30,000 excitatory synapses (Megías et  al., 2001); in the mouse cerebral cort ...

These results indicate that a unidirectional synaptic connection selectively develops between two sister excitatory neurons, but not between non-sisters, in the developing neocortex (Fig. 3g). For example, each individual human cerebellar Purkinje neuron is estimated to receive more than 100,000 excitatory synaptic contacts from granule cells, and additional contacts from local circuit inhibitory interneurons and the powerfully excitatory climbing fiber (Ito 1984). The functional asymmetry of auditory cortex is reflected

... The primary auditory cortex (A1) is organized tonotopically, with neurons sensitive to high and low frequencies arranged in a rostro-caudal gradient. Apical dendrite

An apical dendrite is a dendrite that emerges from the apex of a pyramidal cell. Apical dendrites are one of two primary categories of dendrites, and they distinguish the pyramidal cells from spiny stellate cells in the cortices. Pyramidal cells are found in the prefrontal cortex, the hippocampus, the entorhinal cortex, the olfactory cortex, and other areas. Dendrite arbors formed by apical dendrites are the means by which synaptic inputs into a cell are integrated. The apical dendrites in these regions contribute significantly to memory, learning, and sensory associations by modulating the excitatory and inhibitory signals received by the pyramidal cells.
