Reward-Related Responses in the Human Striatum

... Using event-related fMRI designs allowed researchers to characterize the response of the human striatum through different phases of reward processing. Two interesting questions surfaced, however, with respect to the striatum signal during affective outcomes. First, while activation in both dorsal an ...

Evolution and Memes: The human brain as a selective imitation device

... Dawkins (1976) initially ignored this distinction, using the term ‘meme’ to apply to behaviours and physical structures in a brain, as well as to memetic information stored in other ways (as in his examples of tunes, ideas and fashions). This is sometimes referred to as Dawkins A (Gatherer 1998). La ...

neuronal coding of prediction errors
neuronal coding of prediction errors

... The notion of a prediction error relates intuitively to the very essence of learning. In general terms, learning can be viewed as the acquisition of predictions of outcomes (reward, punishment, behavioral reactions, external stimuli, internal states). Outcomes whose magnitude or frequency is differe ...

Donald O. Hebb

Donald Olding Hebb FRS (July 22, 1904 – August 20, 1985) was a Canadian psychologist who was influential in the area of neuropsychology, where he sought to understand how the function of neurons contributed to psychological processes such as learning. He is best known for his theory of Hebbian learning, which he introduced in his classic 1949 work The Organization of Behavior. He has been described as the father of neuropsychology and neural networks. A Review of General Psychology survey, published in 2002, ranked Hebb as the 19th most cited psychologist of the 20th century. His views on learning described behavior and thought in terms of brain function, explaining cognitive processes in terms of connections between neuron assemblies.
