OTHER DISEASE CAUSING
FACTORS
4 DAYS LEFT…YOU THINK IT’S TIME
TO START STUDYING?
Toxins
• CO2 is a “naturally produced” toxin
• Arsenic in ground water in India
• Ricin
– 1 mg of ricin can kill a human
Genetics
• Genes: heredity material passed from parents
to offspring
• Non-communicable diseases
– Cannot be passed from one person to another
through contact or proximity
– Ex:
• Diabetes, hypertension, cystic fibrosis, PKU,
hemophilia, sickle cell, red green color blindness, etc
Immune Response
• Pathogen enters the body
• Histamine is released
– Histamines cause inflammation (swelling)
– Fluids build up to localize infection
– Blood flow increases
– White blood cells are signaled
– Inflammation response also associated with
creating a fever
Immune Response
• White blood cells travel to site to digest
pathogen (antigen)
– Antigen is a “foreign substance” in the body
• Digestion of pathogen signals presence of
antigen
• Antibodies form against antigens
– T-Cells: recognize an antigen (pathogen)
• Some T-Cells will attack the infected cells
• Other T-Cells activate “B-Cells” to produce antibodies
that will destroy the pathogen
Immune Response
• T-Cells and B-Cells are “White Blood Cells”
• Antibodies are “Antigen Specific”
• Measles antibody will only bind with measles antigen
• After antibodies are produced, immunity
develops to the pathogen
– The ability to resist disease
– can be two types of immunity
• Active Immunity
• Passive Immunity
Immune Response
• Active Immunity
– Acquired when an immune response is activated
by the body
– Long term immunity
• Passive Immunity
– When antibodies are introduced into the body
– When mothers transfer antibodies to an infant
through breast-feeding
– Short term immunity
Healthy Nutrition
• People who make healthy life choices often
avoid chronic or age related diseases
– Healthy diets, exercise, etc
– Others listed on page 218 of PTNCEOC green book
• Nutrients
– Substances needed by an organism to carry out
life functions
• Carbs, fats, proteins, nucleic acids, vitamins and
minerals (Eat Yo’ Wheaties)
