PROTEINS

The functions of proteins




Protein- polymer constructed from a set of just twenty kinds
of monomers called amino acids.
Form structures such as hair and fur, make up muscles, and
provide long term nutrient storage.
Circulate in the blood and defend the body from harmful
microorganisms, act as signals.
Control chemical reactions in a cell.
PROTEINS

Amino acids- building blocks of proteins
 Consists
of a central carbon atom bonded to four
partners.
 3 of the partners are the same in all amino acids
1
is a hydrogen atom
 2 others are a carboxyl group & an amino group
 Side
group (R-group)
PROTEINS
Polypeptide- chain of linked amino acids
 Amino acids are linked together by dehydration
reaction.
 Proteins are made up of one or more
polypeptide chains.
 There are 20 different amino acids.

PROTEIN SHAPE
Each polypeptide is twisted, folded, & coiled
into a unique shape.
 Denaturation - an unfavorable change in
temperature, pH, or some other quality of the
environment can cause a protein to unravel and
lose its normal shape
