Chapter 1
Lesson 1

Cells are the building blocks of life





Cell: is the smallest unit of a living thing
that can perform all life processes
Some living things are made up of 1 cell (Single
Celled Organism)
Plants, animals and humans are made up of many
cells (multi- cellular organism)
Organism: Any living thing
We look at cells using a microscope




All cells have :
nucleus
cell membrane
cytoplasm

Nucleus: is the control center


(“Boss” of the cell)
Instructions for the cells activities are held
here

Just like a recipe book


Cell Membrane: is the cells outer border
Controls what goes into and out of the cell


(acts like a “screen”)
Separates the cell from its environment

Cytoplasm: jell like liquid (looks like jello)




Plant cells only have:
Chloroplast
Cell wall
Large Vacuole

Chloroplast: is a special part of a plant
cell that traps the Sun’s energy.

The Sun’s energy is used to make the plants
food


The cell wall is outside the cell membrane
It helps support and protect the plant cell


Stores water for the plant cell
Water is needed to make the “plant
food”
Animal Cell:
Round
Plant Cell:
Rectangular
