Unit 2:
The Integers
Unlike Dr. Freinstein, we will use a reasonable approach to explain integers and the rules of signs!
Concepts and Skills
Use the number line and other models to think through integers and integer operations.
(Section 2.1 to 2.5)
Use correct vocabulary including “opposite” and “absolute value.” Use correct phrasing to
“hear” how to do the math. (Section 2.1)
Expression
3−7
−7 or (−7)
−𝑥
−(8)
−(6 − 3)
−4 − (−3)
How to Say It
“3 subtract 7” “take 7 from 3”
“3 take away 7”
“3 minus 7”
“negative seven”
“the opposite of 7”
“the opposite of 𝑥”
“the opposite of 8”
“the opposite of the difference of 6 and 3”
“negative four minus negative three"
More Concepts and Skills
Use patterns to justify the rules of signs. (Sections 2.2 to 2.5)
Use UPS and ALWAYS BE REASONABLE. (Sections 2.1 to 2.5)
Memorize the Rules of Signs. To do this, complete hundreds of problems until the rules of signs
are automatic. (Sections 2.2 to 2.5)
Unit 2 Vocabulary and Formulas
Absolute value is the distance from zero. Distance is always positive. 89
Integers are the counting numbers, their opposites, and zero. 85
Negative number is any number less than zero. 85
Opposite sign is shown as a dash (−). 86
Opposites are the same distance from zero but in opposite directions from zero. 88
Positive number is any number greater than zero. 85
Quotient is the result when one number is divided by another. 137
Signed numbers use plus and minus signs to name positive and negative values. 85
Simplifying expressions is writing an equivalent expression using fewer symbols. 128
