Combining Like Terms with Integers
Reminders
1. In order to combine like terms
• Simplify Expression – get rid of ( )
 Terms must have exact same variable
and exact same exponent
 Then you can ADD/SUBTRACT the
coefficients
Subtracting Integers
1. Change to an addition problem
Add the opposite
7- -1 = 7 + 1
-8 – 1 = -8 + -1
-7 - -3 = -7 + 3
2. Use the rules for Adding Integers
Rules for Adding Integers
1. Same Signs
7+8 =15
-6 + -3 =-9
 Add numbers
 Keep Sign
2. Unlike Signs
-7 + 8 = 1
-6 + 3 = -3
 Subtract Numbers
 Keep sign of number
with Larger Absolute
Value
Example #1
-5x + 6x
Example #2
-9x + 8y – x – 5y + 3x
Example #3
6 + 7x – 4y + x + 3y
Example #4
-3(2x + 3y) + 2(6x – y)
Example #5
