Prerequisite skills: Integer Operations
Addition of Integers (Signed Numbers)
Rule #1: If the numbers to be added are of the same sign  add the
corresponding absolute values of the numbers and attach the common sign.
3  7  10
6  (9)  15
Rule #2: If the numbers to be added are of opposite sign  find the difference
between the absolute values of the numbers and attach the sign of the larger
absolute value.
6  (9)  3
3  10  7
Subtraction of Integers (Signed Numbers)
To subtract two numbers, change the operation to addition and change the sign
of the second number to its opposite. (Remember that to subtract you Add the
Opposite)Then proceed using the rules for addition.
12  4
becomes
12  (4)  8
25  (8)
becomes
25  (8)  33
21  (10)
becomes
21  (10)  11
20  6
becomes
20  (6)  26
Multiplication of Integers (Signed Numbers)
Rule #1: If the signs of the two numbers are the same  the product is positive.
Rule #2: If the signs of the two numbers are different  the product is negative.
Division of Integers (Signed Numbers)
Rule #1: If the signs of the two numbers are the same  the quotient is positive.
Rule #2: If the signs of the two numbers are different  the quotient is negative.
