Component #2: 2-Column Notes
Adding Integers
• 2 values with the same sign
• add the absolute values of the
two numbers
• take the sign of the numbers
• example: (-3) + (-11) = -14
• 2 values with different signs
• subtract the absolute values
of the two numbers
• take the sign of the number
with the larger absolute value
• example: (-4) + 16 = 12
Component #3: Summary
Adding Integers
There are two sets of rules to follow when adding
integers. First, if the numbers have the same sign, add the
absolute values and take the sign of the numbers. For
example, to add -6 plus -11, add 6 and 11 and make the
answer negative. The result is -17. Second, if the
numbers have different signs, subtract the absolute values
and take the sign of the number with the larger absolute
value. For example, to add 15 plus -10, subtract 10 from
15 and make the answer positive. The result is 5.
