Vocabulary
Crescendo: to gradually become louder
Decrescendo: to gradually become softer
Tempo: the speed of the music
Ritardando (ritard. or rit.): to gradually slow the tempo
Tie: connects two notes that are the same (alphabet name) together
Slur: connects two different notes together
Solo: one person plays
Soli: whole section plays
Dynamics are the loudness or softness of the music.
4/4 time is often called common time
Time signatures have two numbers. The top number is the number of beats in a measure and the bottom number is
what kind of note gets the beat.
These tempo markings are from fastest to slowest: allegro, moderato, andante
A key signature is made up of sharps or flats placed right after the clef. It tells you what notes will be sharp or flat in the
piece.
