Winter Break Math Project
Name ____________________
*For Math Warm-Up, you had to estimate of the number of times your heart
beats per day. If it beats about 70 times per minute, how many times per day
is that? 100….1000….10,000?
Having an awareness of numbers and their properties is called Number Sense.
Number Sense is something that we work on in every grade and means
understanding how big numbers are, how little numbers are, and how they
compare to each other. Here are a few example questions that would test
your Number Sense.
- Which is bigger….32,692 or 293,112 ?
- How long would it take to count to 10,000 ?
- Which number is closest to how many steps you take
every day? 1000 or 10,000 or 1,000,000
- How high is a stack of 100 pennies?
So….
We are going to use the number 1000 to practice our number sense. Do
you really know how big that number is? Could you count to 1000? Can you
picture what 1000 pencils would look like? Can you imagine 1000 people in a
room? What could 1000 dollars buy? These are questions to think about.
Our activity…..
For the 12 days off of school, it will be your job to collect, gather, or
create 1000 of anything. That’s right – anything. It could be 1000 pieces of
rice or 1000 stickers. It could be 1000 squares of paper or 1000 Cheerios.
There are an infinite number of possibilities. The only requirement is that
there is 1000 of them. It is your own 1000 collection. We talked about many
other ideas in class. The collection must be in some sort of container, bag or
other appropriate holding device. Try to be as creative as you can. Of
course, don’t have unnecessary costs or struggles to meet the criteria but do
try to be as individual with your project as you can.
Assessment….
The project assessment checklist is as follows. Meeting the standard is
not affected by what you bring. As long as there are 1000 items, you have
fulfilled your Number Sense Collection requirement. Exceeding the standard,
however, is affected by the style and display of learning.
