CHAPITRE 6
RECIPROCAL VERBS
Pupil’s Edition, Level 3, p. 162
In English
When you use the expressions one another or each other, the action of the
verb is reciprocal. As with reflexive verbs, the subject(s) receive(s) the action of the verb.
Sean and Lori like
each other.
In English, if the meaning is clear enough, you don’t have to say each other. In
the sentence below, who will speak to whom is obvious, so you could leave out
to each other.
Let’s talk (to
each other) on the phone tonight.
Because the reciprocity of action verbs takes place between several people or things,
these verbs are necessarily plural.
A.
Underline the reciprocal phrase (verb + pronoun) in each sentence.
1. Manuel and Robert help each other study for the test.
2. Elisa and Anne argue with each other all the time.
3. Now the girls aren’t speaking to one another.
4. They finally made up with each other.
5. We like each other.
6. The family members support one another.
7. Ricardo and Lucy never lie to each other.
8. The students tell one another about their vacation.
In French Reciprocal verbs use some of the same pronouns as reflexive verbs:
se, nous, and vous. These pronouns are plural and generally mean each other.
Nous nous voyons le week-end. We see each other on weekends.
In the
passé composé, reciprocal verbs take the helping verb être.
Elles
se sont vues à la gare.
When a verb takes an indirect object, the past participle does not agree with the
pronoun.
Nous
nous sommes téléphoné.

commander, offrir, demander, and conseiller. Whenever you learn a verb,
