Call for Hematology Research Training Program Applications
The Hematology Research Training Program has openings for 4 pre-doctoral and 2 post-doctoral
(PhD, MD or MD, PhD) positions. This training grant supports research in basic and translational
mechanisms regulating the production of blood cells and in regulating the genes relevant to normal
blood cell maturation and function.
Major areas of interest include blood cell molecules, growth factors, membrane structure and
function, and diseases of red blood cell production and survival. Specific areas include hematopoietic
stem cell and progenitor phenotypes, and regulatory molecules including erythropoietin and other
cytokines that influence stem cell and progenitor cell survival, proliferation and maturation. Studies of
metabolism, storage, and transport of iron are also supported, as are disorders that result from
disturbed heme metabolism and hypoxia regulation of blood production. Translational research
supported by this training program includes development of disease biomarkers, gene targeted
therapies, blood stem cell transplantation for heritable blood diseases (non-malignant), effects of HIV
infection and treatment on red blood cells, and pathophysiology and therapy of iron deficiency and
overload diseases.
Applicants must be US citizens or hold a green card. The criteria for selection will be scientific
excellence and relevance of the proposed research to the theme of the training program. Support is
provided for a maximum of 2 years. Second year support is subject to evaluation by the training grant
steering committee.
Applications should include:
1. Cover page including the title of the project, lab sponsor and year of entrance into the Graduate
Program for pre-doctoral applicants and years in training for post-doctoral applicants.
2. Your curriculum vitae
3. A brief (1- 2 pages, excluding figures and references) description of your proposed research
project and a statement addressing how your research project is relevant to the theme of the training
program. Include a brief statement about your career goals.
4. For pre-doctoral applicants, include copies of your undergraduate and graduate academic
transcripts. Submit the above application materials (1-4) in a single PDF file.
5. A letter of support from your major professor plus two letters of recommendation from faculty who
are familiar with your research.
