Study Guide for Investigation 4 Test
1. Label all of the letters on this electromagnet with the name of the
component.
A- Wire
B- D-cell
C- Holder for washers
D- Coils of wire
E- Iron core
F- Switch
2. Know what each of the components does in a circuit. A- provides a
pathway for electricity B- provides stored energy C- Just a holder DProvides a magnetic field E- Creates a temporary magnet when circuit has
electricity flowing through F- Controls the flow of electricity
3. Give two ways to make an electromagnet like the one we made in class
stronger.

1- Wrap more coils around the iron core
2- Wire a second D-cell into the circuit
What type of material can be made into a temporary magnet?
Only iron or steel can be turned into a temporary magnet.
How does electricity flow in an electromagnet? The electricity flows
through the wires that are hooked up to a D-cell starting by going out the
negative and back into the positive terminal. It also flows through the
switch if it is in the closed position.
In an electromagnet, if two rivet heads come together and they are set up
the exact same way, what will happen? Do you think they will repel,
attract, or cancel out the magnetism in each other?
The two electromagnets will repel.
Know how to read a line graph! The x and y axis will be labeled and there
will be a line drawn. Use the one we had for our investigation with the
electromagnet and number of coils.
Why does a closed circuit cause a compass needle to move? When an
electric current flows through a wire, it creates a magnetic field around the
wire. This will cause the compass needle to react when it is close to a wire
that is making a complete circuit.
Be able to compare permanent magnets and electromagnets. List some
ways they are alike and different.
alike- magnetic field, attract the same objects, same poles, follow the same
general rule
different- you can control an electromagnet with a switch, an electromagnet
needs an electric circuit to work
