KIDNEY
Renal vein, renal artery
and ureter are found in the
sinus in anterior to
posterior order
3
INTERNAL STRUCTURE OF THE KIDNEY
Each kidney consists
of:
 Outer cortex convex
 Inner medulla concave
formed of renal
pyramids with apex
forming renal papilla
it’s open to the
 Minor calyces
 Major calyces
 Renal pelvis fills most of
the sinus
 Cortex extends into
medulla as renal
columns

POSTERIOR RELATION OF THE KIDNEY

Diaphragm separates the
kidney from the pleural cavity
and 11th and 12th ribs

Psoas major medially

Quadratus lumborum in the
middle

transversus abdominis
laterally

NOTE
The right and lift kidney are
similar except the right
kidney does not have 11th rib

URETER
It shows three
constriction along its
course:
1. Between ureter and
pelvis
2. At crossing the
external iliac artery
3. At entrance to
urinary bladder
