An Analysis of Pricing in the U.S. Cotton Seed Market

The purpose of the research in this paper is to investigate the impact of differentiated vertical strategies by agricultural
biotechnology firms in the U.S. cottonseed market. The model advances the measurement of industry concentration to consider
substitution/complementarity relationships among differentiated products delivered under different vertical structures. We find
evidence of sub-additive pricing in the stacking of bundled biotech traits. Prices paid by farmers for cottonseed sold under vertical
integration are found to be higher than under licensing. The model is flexible and allows for evaluation of the effects of changing
market structures. The parameters on traditional measures of concentration indicate that higher concentration leads to...

This paper investigates the pricing of patented traits in the U.S. hybrid corn seed market under imperfect competition. In a
multiproduct context, we first examine how substitution/complementarity relationships among products can affect pricing. This is
used to motivate multi-product generalizations of the Herfindahl-Hirschman index (GHHI) capturing cross-market effects of
imperfect competition on bundle pricing. The GHHI model is applied to pricing of conventional and patented biotech seeds in the
US from 2000-2007. One major finding is that standard component pricing in biotech traits is soundly rejected in favor of
subadditive bundle pricing. The econometric estimates show how changes in market structures (as measured by both own- and
cross-Herfindahl...

Effect of Prices, Traits and Market Structure on Corn Seeding Density

Recent agronomic research finds that economically optimal seeding densities have likely increased for many Midwestern corn
farmers as a result of genetic improvements including new GM traits such as Bt corn and herbicide tolerance. We derive a per
acre demand model for hybrid seed corn to examine the determinants of corn seeding densities and estimate the model using a
large data set of individual farmer seed corn purchases. Current results identify factors other than prices affecting farmer corn
seeding densities. Among these factors are the GM trait of the seed corn, measures of the local seed corn market structure, seed
purchase source and intended end use. We interpret these effects in terms of information effects—farmers with more/better
access to...

An Analysis of Bundle Pricing in Horizontal and Vertical Markets: The Case of the U.S. Cottonseed
Market

In this paper, we investigate substitution/complementarity relationships among products sold with different bundled characteristics
and under different vertical arrangements. Our conceptual model demonstrates the interactive price impacts emanating from
product differentiation, market concentration and market size. The model is applied to the U.S. cottonseed market using
transaction level data from 2002 to 2007. This market has been impacted structurally in numerous ways due to the advances and
the rapid adoption of seeds with differing bundles of biotechnology traits and vertical penetration emanating from the
biotechnology seed industry. Several interesting findings are reported. The econometric investigation finds evidence of
sub-additive pricing in the...

Modeling Agricultural Innovation in a Rapidly Developing Country: The Case of Chinese Pesticide
Industry

Guanming; Pray,
Carl E.
Technology and innovation play an increasingly important role in the economic development of both developed and developing
countries. We investigate how policy and market factors influence firms’ (or other potential innovators’) decisions on innovation
or imitation by developing a conceptual model and then empirically testing it using pesticide innovation data from a rapidly
developing country, China. We find that the government encouraged local innovation by opening regions to more international
trade, more investment in public research and education, strengthening intellectual property right (IPR) enforcement, and limiting
the role of foreign inventors. However, the role of the extension of patent life in the early 1990s has little impact. Theory and...

CHANGES IN INCOME AND WELFARE DISTRIBUTION IN URBAN CHINA AND
IMPLICATIONS FOR FOOD CONSUMPTION AND TRADE
Provedor de dados: 31

Qingbin; Shi,

Yi.
While China’'s economic reform has brought about significant economic growth, there is a considerable debate about the impact
of such market-oriented reform on income and welfare distributions. This paper examines the changes in income and welfare
distributions in urban China from 1981 to 1998 and discusses implications for China’'s food consumption patterns and trade
behavior. While the Lorenz curves estimated using Kakwani’'s interpolation method indicate that the level of income inequality
in urban China has increased significantly since 1981, welfare comparisons based on generalized Lorenz curves suggest that the
rise in real average income has more than compensated for the increase in inequality and has therefore brought about continuous
improvement...

On Pricing and Vertical Organization of Differentiated Products: The Case of Soybean Seed Industry
Provedor de dados: 31
Autores: Shi,
Guanming; Chavas,
Jean-Paul.
This paper investigates the pricing and vertical organization of differentiated products under imperfect competition. In a
multiproduct context, a Cournot model is used to examine how substitution/complementarity relationships among products and
vertical structures can affect the exercise of market power. This motivates a generalization of the Herfindahl-Hirschman index
(termed VHHI) capturing how market concentration and vertical structures interact to influence prices of differentiated products.
The analysis is applied to pricing of soybean seeds in the US over the period 2000-2007. The analysis considers two vertical
structures employed by biotech firms: vertical integration and licensing. The econometric analysis finds evidence that vertical...

BUNDLING AND LICENSING OF GENES IN AGRICULTURAL BIOTECHNOLOGY
Provedor de dados: 31

This paper examines the strategic incentive for gene holders to vertically integrate with seed companies, and with
herbicide/insecticide oligopolies, given the unique institutional structure and relevant market in agricultural biotechnology. We
model the case with homogeneous basic seeds, and investigate both pre-entry and post-entry equilibrium.

The Effects of Vertical Organization on the Pricing of Differentiated Products
Provedor de dados: 31
Autores: Shi,

Jean-Paul.
We investigate differentiated product pricing and the effects of vertical organization under imperfect competition. We rely on
vertical measures of concentration (termed VHHI) to study how the exercise of market power varies with
substitution/complementarity relationships among products and vertical structures. This approach is applied to U.S. soybean seed
pricing under vertical integration versus licensing. We find evidence that vertical organization affects seed prices, with an impact
ranging from 1.87% to 13.6% of the mean price. These effects vary by institutional setup. We also find that complementarity can
mitigate price enhancements associated with market concentration.

A Dynamic Adoption Model with Bayesian Learning: Application to the U.S. Soybean Market
Provedor de dados: 31
Autores: Ma,
Xingliang; Shi,
Guanming.
Agricultural technology adoption is often a sequential process. Farmers may adopt a new technology in part of their land first and
then adjust in later years based on what they learn from the earlier partial adoption. This paper presents a dynamic adoption model
with Bayesian learning, in which forward-looking farmers learn from their own experience and from their neighbors about the
new technology. The model is compared to that of a myopic model, in which farmers only maximize their current benefits. We
apply the analysis to a sample of U.S. soybean farmers from year 2000 to 2004 to examine their adoption pattern of a newly
developed genetically modified (GM) seed technology. We show that the myopic model predicts lower adoption rates in early
years than...

Pricing and Vertical Organization of Differentiated Products

This paper investigates differentiated product pricing and vertical organization under imperfect competition. We develop a
conceptual model of multiproduct pricing to examine how the exercise of market power varies with substitution/complementarity
relationships among products and vertical structures. The analysis is applied to US soybean seed pricing during the period
between 2000 and 2007. It considers two vertical structures: Vertical integration and licensing. We find evidence that vertical
organization has significant effects on prices. These effects vary depending on the institutional setup and the bundling of genetic
material. The empirical evidence shows that, in a multi-market context, complementarity and economies of scope can mitigate the
price...
