Advertisements: Move to a Town in Medieval Europe!
You will create an advertisement to encourage people to move
to towns/cities in Europe. You want the ad to explain the
benefits of moving to a town/city. So, in the ad, make sure you
do the following:
-explain why towns have a growing food supply
-describe the trade that takes place in towns
-explain how a town can be created with a charter
-give examples of how towns are growing in size
-explain the changes in business, especially the use of
partnerships and capital
-define guild, and list the benefits of belonging to a guild
-if you have time, draw a picture to represent a medieval town

-what kind of technology improved farming? (harnesses, plows)
-what was the three-field system? (left 1/3 empty to keep land fertile)
-what type of goods were traded? (Chinese silks, Byzantine gold, Asian spices)
-how could a town be formed? (charters, what are they?)
-how did business change? What new types of businesses formed? (partnerships; letters of
credit/exchange, cashed in at banks)
-who was in the middle class? (merchants, traders, artisans); compare this to middle class of
other civilizations
-what is a guild? Evaluate whether you should belong to a guild (controlled town life; protected
their interests and wealth, regulated work hours and set prices; but hard to join, especially for
many women)
-what was it like to live in cities? (overcrowded, narrow streets, fires common; no garbage
collection or sewage system, so smelly/dirty)
