Cell Theory
1. All living things are composed of cells.
2. Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things.
3. New cells are produced from existing cells.
Levels of Organization
Cells- Tissues- Organs- Organ Systems- Organisms
So what limits cell size?
1. Surface area to volume- Surface area does not increase at the same
rate as volume in a growing cell (would explode).
2. Resources- Movement of glucose and oxygen into the cell at some
point cannot meet the needs of the cell. The same idea holds for the
movement of wastes out of the cell.
3. DNA- DNA must be able to control protein production; larger cells would
not have enough DNA to produce enough proteins for the cell’s normal
functions.
Prokaryotes vs. Eukaryotes
Prokaryotes
Smaller, simpler
Does not contain a nucleus
Has cell membrane and cytoplasm
Usually divides by binary fission
Ex) bacteria
Eukaryotes
More complex
Contains a nucleus
Has specialized structures called
organelles
Divides by mitosis
Ex) animal and plant cells
Famous Scientists:
Scientists name
Robert Hooke
Anton van Leeuwenhoek
Robert Brown
Theodor Schwann
Mathias Schleiden
Rudolf Virchow
What they did
First to see cells (cork)
First person to see animal cells under a
microscope
First to see the nucleus
All animals are made of cells
All plants are made of cells
All cells come from other living cells
