We thought you would like to know something about the artists after whom these turtles were named. Michelangelo These artists were alike in many ways. • They were Italian. • They worked in a city called Florence at one time in their careers. • They lived in a period of time about 500 years ago called the Renaissance (REHN-uhsahns). • They enjoyed great fame while they were living. • As was the custom in those days, they all began working as Raphael apprentices (a-PREN-tuh-sees) at a very young age (12 or a little older). They served as assistants to older artists. All had patrons, or people who bought their works and helped support them. The artists did not just go out and paint a picture or create a sculpture and hope to sell it. Their patrons put in an order or commissioned the artists to do a certain piece of art. 1400 DonateIIo Donatello carved this marble statue of St. George. Museo Nazionale, Florence (SCALA / Art Resources) Donatello (DAHN-uh-TELL-o) was the only artist who did not know the others. He died before the others were born. He was one of the greatest sculptors of all time. While he was very good at making statues in marble, he was best at casting them in bronze. He lived from 1386-1466. Each block above stands for 100 years. =~=m he Renaissance was a period in history that began in Italy in the 1300s. It later spread to several nearby countries. It ended in the 1600s. The word "Renaissance" means "being born again." What was "born again" was an interest in the writing and art of ancient Greece and Rome. A bust of Lorenzo de Medici (de MED-uh-chee). It was divided into areas called citystates. The Mini Page recently spoke with the singer and actor. Jason, 22, is from Australia. His father is an actor and his mother worked in television. Jason said, . "Ginevra de' Bend" (c. 1474) by Leonardo de Vinci, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. Leonardo da Vinci left behind few paintings, but the "Mona Lisa" is one of the most famous in the world. Michelangelo Michelangelo (Mykuhl-ANjuh-lo) was perhaps the greatest sculptor who's ever lived. He was also a painter, a poet, and an architect of churches, palaces and fortresses. He lived from 1475-1564. It took When he was only about 20 years old, Michelangelo carved the Pieta. This shows the Virgin Mary holding Jesus. Michelangelo about four years to finish the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. "Saint George and the Dragon," (c. 1506) by Raphael, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. Raphael was a very sensitive artist. Many think he was one of the most gifted painters who's ever lived. He did many paintings of the Madonna and child (Mary and the baby Jesus). He also did many frescoes, or wall paintings. They are listed in order of difficulty, with the easier pre-reader assignments listed first. Ask the children to do the following: 1. Compare the art you see in this issue. How are they alike and different? What different styles do you see? Which do you like the best? 2. Pretend you are commissioning a painting from a Renaissance artist. Look at photos in your paper to find a picture you would like to have as a painting or sculpture. 3. If possible, visit a museum and look at the different types of artwork. 4. What do you think of Renaissance art? How is it different from the art you see today? What would it have been like to live during the Renaissance? Do you like visiting museums? Why is it important to study and understand art? Would you like to be a professional artist when you grow up? 5. Find Italy, Rome and Florence on a world map. How does Italy compare in size to the United States? 6. Circle all the years. Which is the oldest? Which is the most recent? What is the difference between the two?
