SCIENCE VOCABULAR STUDY GUIDE – VOLCANOES
RING OF FIRE - Major BELT of volcanoes that rims the Pacific Ocean.
MAGMA - Molten Mixture of rock-forming substances, gases, and water from the mantle. [MM]
LAVA - Liquid magma that REACHES THE SURFACE. (L – Lava/Liquid)
SILICA - Material that is formed from oxygen and SILICON; it is found in magma. (SILIC)
VOLCANO - Weak spot in the crust where magma has come to surface.
MAGMA CHAMBER - Pocket beneath a volcano where Magma Collects. [MC]
HOT SPOT - Area where magma from deep in the mantle MELTS through crust above it.
EXTINCT - A volcano that is UNLIKELY to erupt again.
ISLAND ARC - String of ISLANDS formed by volcanoes along a deep ocean trench. (Has the word Island)
CALDERA - Large hole at the top of a volcano formed when the roof of a volcano’s magma chamber collapses.
DORMANT - Volcano that does NOT show signs of erupting in the near future.
ACTIVE - Volcano that IS erupting or shows signs of erupting in the near future.
CINDER CONE - Steep, cone-shaped hill or mountain made of volcanic ash, CINDERS, and bombs piled up
around a volcano. (Has the word CINDER)
COMPOSITE VOLCANO - Tall, cone-shaped mountain in which layers of lava alternate with layers of ash and
other volcanic materials. (T in composite for Tall volcano)
SHIELD VOLCANO – Wide gently-sloping mountain made of layers of lava and formed by QUIET eruptions.
(SH makes the sh sound like when you tell someone to be quiet – sh)
GEYSER – Fountain of water and steam that builds up pressure underground and erupts at regular intervals.
HOT SPRING – Pool formed by groundwater that has risen to the surface after being HEATED by a nearby body
of magma.
GEOTHERMAL ENERGY – ENERGY from water or steam that has been heated by magma.
DIKE – Slab of volcanic rock formed when magma FORCES itself across layers of rock.
SILL – Slab of volcanic rock formed when magma SQUEEZES between layers of rock. (The one that Squeezes is
SILL – both begin with Letter S)
BATHOLITH – Mass of rock formed when large body of magma cooled inside Earth’s Crust.
VOLCANIC NECK – Deposit of hardened magma in a volcano’s PIPE. The softer rock around it wears away and
exposes it. (Think about how your NECK is like a PIPE – it went down the wrong pipe)
