Name: Date: Symbiosis Activity Two individuals of the same or different species may interact in a variety of different ways. A very specific interaction that may occur between the organisms is called symbiosis. There are several types of symbiosis: 1. Competition: there is a competition for a resource between 2 species. Both are harmed. 2. Predation: One species, the predator, kills and consumes the other species, the prey. The predator is benefitted and the prey is harmed. 3. Commensalism: one species benefits from the interaction while the other is neither helped nor harmed. 4. Mutualism: both species are benefitted by the relationship. 5. Parasitism: One species, the parasites, lives in or on the other species, the host. The parasite is benefitted and the host is harmed in this relationship. TASK For your pair of organisms, classify the type of interaction that takes place, and briefly describe the specific interaction. You will have 1-3 minutes to deliver an oral presentation to your class. Please keep these criteria in mind: - You will speak for at least 1 minute and no longer than 3. - You should describe the relationship between the species. - Name the type of symbiosis (#1-8 above). - Be sure you tell which species are benefitted, harmed, or unaffected. - You may refer to notes but you may not read your oral presentation! - You may show a picture of your species if you want but it is not necessary.
