Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis- production of food for a plant- in the
form of glucose: C6H12O6
Raw Materials- (also known as the reactants) necessary
substances to produce a product
Raw Materials for photosynthesis-H2O, CO2 & light
energy
- H2O enters the plant through the roots
- CO2 if found in the air and enters through the stoma
- Light energy- from the sun or artificial light
- Occurs in palisade layer, sometimes in the spongy layerin the chloroplasts
Products- what is made during the reaction- sugar and
oxygen
The equation for photosynthesis is:
Carbon Dioxide + Water
Sugar +Oxygen
CO2 + H2O
C6H12O6 + O2
This equation is not balanced, the balanced equation is :
6CO2 + 6 H2O
C6H12O6 +6O2
There are other photosynthetic organisms:
Some bacteria, algae, the protist euglena
Uses of the products of photosynthesis:
O2 is released to the air- for all organisms to breathe
Glucose- when consumed by us in the form of eating plant
materials it gives us energy. Glucose is a simple sugar and
is found in many foods. However, before it can be used
for energy, it must be broken down in a series of
chemical reactions, this is known as cellular respiration,
and it occurs in the mitochondria.
The energy produced in CR is in the form of ATP- or
adenosine triphosphate.
The equation for the process of cellular respiration is
similar to photosynthesis:
Raw Materials are glucose and O2, and the products are
carbon dioxide, water and energy.
The equation:
C6H12O6 +6O2
6H2O +C6O2 ++ ATP
* the raw materials for cellular respiration + the
products of photosynthesis
