Ch 13 Lesson 2 Notes – addiction, dependence,
secondhand smoke
Addiction – a physical or mental need for a drug or other
substance
Can be tobacco, alcohol, drugs, caffeine, video games
or anything
 Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
lists nicotine addiction to be the most common for of
drug addiction in the US.
Physiological Dependence – Type of addiction in which the
body itself feels a direct need for a drug. Body craves it.
- It takes approximately 20 seconds for nicotine
to reach the brain
- Activates the adrenal glands
- Leaves the body craving more
Psychological Dependence - Type of addiction in which the
mind send signals to the body that it needs more of a
substance. Association of activities (coffee and cigarette in
morning)
Withdrawals – physical symptoms that occur when someone
stops using a substance they are addicted to.
- Nervousness
- Moodiness
- Difficulty sleeping
- Tremors
Public Health Cost of Tobacco – In 2006 Ohio became a
smoke-free state in hopes of lowering the health issues.
Users cannot smoke in public places; restaurants, public
buildings etc.
Secondhand smoke – smoke that a nonsmoker inhales
Passive smokers – people who don’t smoke but are exposed
to tobacco smoke as a result of being around smokers
Mainstream smoke – smoke a smoker exhales
Sidestream smoke - smoke that comes from the burning tip
of a cigarette
