WHAT TOBACCO DOES TO THE BODY Tobacco has harmful effects on nearly every body system EFFECTS ON THE NERVOUS SYSTEM Short Term Effects Nicotine changes the brain chemistry causing addiction Withdrawal symptoms occur as early as 30 minutes from the last cigarette Because of the change in brain chemistry adrenaline is released increasing heart rate and blood pressure Long Term Effects Reduces the flow of oxygen to the brain, increasing the chances of a stroke EFFECTS ON THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM Short Term Effects Constricts (narrows) blood vessels reducing oxygen supply to body tissue Increases the heart rate Long Term Effects Causes fatty buildup that clogs blood vessels Reduced oxygen flow may damage the heart increasing the likelihood of heart disease EFFECTS ON THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM Short Term Effects Shortness of breath Affecting the ability to walk, run, climb bicycle and so on.
