Science Project Abstract
There are four main sections of a Science Fair Project Abstract. They are the Objective or Goal, Method
and Materials, Results, and finally Discussion and Conclusions. The complete abstract should be no longer than
about 250 words. It should always be typed (or word processed). It is brief and to the point. Here is your review:
1) Objective or Goal: State the objective, goal, purpose or hypothesis upon which the project is based.
Example: My objective was to learn if different fertilizers affect the tastes of tomatoes. When stated as a
question it would sound like this, "Do different fertilizers affect the taste of tomatoes?” You should also
include your hypothesis. Example: Stated as a hypothesis, the statement would sound like this, "The use of
different fertilizers will have an affect on the taste of tomatoes."
2) Materials and Methods: Indicate the materials, methods, and experimental design used in your project.
Briefly describe your experiment or engineering methods.
3) Results (Data): Summarize the results of your experiment and indicate how they relate to your objective.
4) Discussions/Conclusions: Indicate if your results supported your hypothesis or enabled you to attain your
objective. Discuss briefly how information from this project expands our knowledge about the category
subject.
Example of an abstract:
TITLE:
The Effect Of Air Temperature On The Speed A Hot Air Balloon Rises
PROBLEM STATEMENT:
The idea for this project came from reading about why hot air balloons rise. The first idea was to wonder if
it could get too hot for a hot air balloon to work. Now my hypothesis is that I believe: “The hotter the air around a
hot air balloon, then the slower the hot air balloon will rise.
PROCEDURES:
1. build a hot air balloon
2. find a room over ten feet tall that has very little wind and where I can control the temperature (The back
stairwell at church and a couple of heaters were found to work well)
3. design a data table for the data needed,
4. get someone to help with the data gathering,
5. run 4 trials at each temperature,
6. calculate the average time in seconds and divide that into the distance (10 ft) to get the average speed
in feet per second for each temperature
7. construct a line graph of the average speeds to illustrate the effect
8. write up the analysis of the data and
9. the conclusion
DATA:
The average speed of the hot air balloon in 45 C was the slowest at 1.4 ft/sec. It was a little faster
(1.7ft/sec) at 35 C. The average speed of the hot air balloon in 25 C was the fastest at 2.2 ft/sec.
CONCLUSION:
The hotter the air around a hot air balloon, then the slower the hot air balloon will rise.
